Yay or Nay?: Crop Top

This Yay or Nay- we’re debating a highly controversial trend: The Crop Top. I studied fashion in college and this subject was pretty much a minefield any time it was brought up. On the one hand, we have designers like Alexander Wang who showed the trend on the runway. We also have the celeb followers of the crop top, and these are heavy weights like Rihanna and Diane Kruger. On the other hand, we have the naysayers- those who think it comes off slightly tarty, immature or just plain passé (hello- Clueless in the 90’s!)

I myself own a long sleeve cropped sweater which only shows my stomach if I lift my arms up. I have worn it once or twice with high waisted skirts. I feel like this is the trick to wearing a crop top- balance it out with a high waisted bottom or long skirts. Check out the three crop top options below- would you be brave enough to bare it all in one of these? Or maybe you already own one?

![]() | I have to say Nay for this one for me, but it would be alright on someone younger and fit enough to pull it off. |
![]() | There's a key difference between wearing it '90s style (high crop top, low riding bottoms) and the more modern approach of pairing it with high-waisted bottoms like Rihanna and Diane Kruger. Exposing the belly button is what dates the look and makes this a big Nay for me, but when worn age-appropriately and in a tasteful and flattering way (this being a very tricky thing to pull off), I could be okay with it. Not on me though! |
![]() | Ok, now Kesha IS the epitome of skanky. No matter what she wears. Crop top or no crop top wouldn't change that. |

Nay! It looks really "dated" and cheap in my opinion. Only girls of a certain body type can really pull this off (and even then it doesnt look all too great). |
![]() | I think that very few people can pull this look off. So for me its a nay! However if I was forced to wear one of these shirts I would choose the pink one with the heart and I would wear it with some short shorts for a cute pajama outfit :) |

![]() | I wore crop tops a lot when I was in my 20s and 30s. Then again, I never had any extra weight around my waist and had a very good body. In pictures I've seen of myself from that time, I can honestly say it looked good on me. Would I wear them now? No, seeing as I now have a bit more weight around my waist, not to mention the fact that I'm 43 and it would look ridiculous at this age. I have no problem with it if somebody can pull it off. At the time, I could, and I did. I don't think it looks trashy or skanky at all. Don't think I looked trashy or skanky when wearing crop tops, either. People's opinions are only that. Opinions. Couldn't care less about what other people think about what I choose to wear. |
