Yay or Nay?: Crop Top

Posted by Alexandra C. | Monday August 29, 201171 comments

This Yay or Nay- we’re debating a highly controversial trend: The Crop Top. I studied fashion in college and this subject was pretty much a minefield any time it was brought up. On the one hand, we have designers like Alexander Wang who showed the trend on the runway. We also have the celeb followers of the crop top, and these are heavy weights like Rihanna and Diane Kruger. On the other hand, we have the naysayers- those who think it comes off slightly tarty, immature or just plain passé (hello- Clueless in the 90’s!)

I myself own a long sleeve cropped sweater which only shows my stomach if I lift my arms up. I have worn it once or twice with high waisted skirts. I feel like this is the trick to wearing a crop top- balance it out with a high waisted bottom or long skirts. Check out the three crop top options below- would you be brave enough to bare it all in one of these? Or maybe you already own one?

its a nay for me, it looks sloppy unless you are going for the 80's look.

I think the crop top look isn't for everyone. I've seen it on people with non flat stomachs and it looks bad. This is a look for those with the body to pull it off as long as you balance it. I've seen it done really well with skinny jeans and even shorts. I've also seen it with a high waisted skirt and it looked really good.

YAY if you have the body for it! I know I don't... haha!

I like Rihanna's look because it is on trend but elegant. This is a hard look to pull off.

I think they can be really cute, but when someone wears a hideous knit one.....NAY! Also I think some people can pull it off!

yay! with the right body type and high-waisted shorts, no reason to 'nay'

Overall, I have to say Nay. I don't really like the look b/c it's a little too retro for me.

However, I do agree with some ppl comments that if you have the right body, it can look good. (But when you've got the perfect abs, you'd look good in anything. So I guess this is not really a good point.)

If I had a nice midriff like the ladies above, it would be a yay! But I have some ab workouts I have to do... therefore it is sadly a NAY.

I'm going to have to say Nay on this one. I personally would not wear them and only a select few that do can actually pull them off. I HAVE seen a couple people that I liked them on but that is few and far between. They may be popular now but I have a feeling this trend will be fading soon!
