Dress Up Your Top Knot Bun

Posted by Alexandra C. | Wednesday September 19, 201212 comments

Maybe I shouldn't admit this but I just can't hold it in any longer. Ttruth is, lately I can't be bothered with my hair. If you look back into past pose offs or articles, I almost always have my hair down. But for the past few months, my locks have been permanently locked (I know, I know, I'm bad) into a top knot style. I love a good bun. Seriously. They're just so much easier to deal with. You can just pile up all that hair on top of your head and be done with it. My addiction to buns has only worsened now that I've been introduced to and quickly become BFFs with the sock bun (see DIY tutorial here and here).

The bad news is, the top knot can get really 'blah' and 'boring' when you wear it everyday (like I do). So, in an effort to fancy myself up, because like they say 'variety is the spice of life', I've found some easy peasy ways to glam up a basic top knot.

Braids: There are a ton of ways you can incorporate a braid and there are a ton of varieties in the types of braids too. Play around with size and number to add visual interest to a top knot.

Dyed: Colour blocking in hair is set to be a huge fall trend and in a top knot, you can show off all your colours. If you want to go a bit 'out there', try streaks or dip dying in different rainbow colours. If you don't want to commit to dye, try hair chalking or clip in extensions.

Embellishments: Turbans, headbands, hair pieces or scarves!

Texture and Style: Experiment with your ballerina bun by back combing to add texture. Or use a beach spray. Make it a polished and slicked back look or mess it up for a boho look.

What is your favourite and easy way to add a little somethin' somethin' to your hair?

Theres definitely a few styles in here I would love to try and I'm going to keep my eye on. I put my hair in a bun almost every day but this would add some originality.

I've gotten lazier with my hair lately, especially over the summer when I couldn't be bothered in the heat to blowdry my hair or wear it down over my neck and back. I still haven't mastered the top knot or sock bun yet though :-( When I do, I will definitely be adding scarves and some trendy headbands like the ones from the other article (I'd do braids, but I suck at those too)

Love the braided top buns...not keen on the scarfs. It looks messy.

I am just like you and I pretty much wear a bun every day, even if I go out with my hair down it eventually just becomes so frizzy and up in the bun it goes. I really like the look of the braid wrapped around the bun. Every so often I do a braided bang so it looks like I put some effort into my hair, but in reality it takes two seconds.

I love the braids, very cute! I'm not sold on a lot of the fabrics though, too crazy for me.
