East Meets West: The 'Evil Eye' in Fashion

The blue Turkish emblem protects the wearer from the evil eye. It’s worn by the superstitious, the spiritual, and now—the fashionable!

The symbol originated in Ancient Muslim and Jewish cultures, but many people today still believe in its protective powers, and wear the blue amulet on a bracelet.  Katy Perry often wears this 18k gold evil eye bracelet by Turkish jeweler Atelier Minyon...
Naomi Campbell, Kim Kardashian, Brittny Gastineau and Rihanna also love evil eye jewelry...

Check out these funky bracelet variations with the evil eye...
(clockwise from Top Left) Emitations US$73, Dawn's US$10, Tres Glam US$200, Ross Simons Swarovski US$695, AmuletGifts US$35, Ettika US$36

And hey, if it has protective powers, then why limit the symbol to jewelry?Paris Hilton owns one of these evil eye t-shirts by London-based designer Lamis Khamis
The eye also appears on these bold scarves from Otrera, US$198...and on a clutch designed by mother-daughter duo Lisa and Brittny GastineauMechante of London
Do our eyes deceive us, or is this an evil eye-inspired shoe...?

Even Project Runway Season 8 contestant Michael Costello created a fabric based on the evil-eye in the Episode 10 challenge "Design your own textile".

Would you pick up an evil eye print? Or do you prefer more delicate charm jewelry?

I really hate that religious symbols become "trendy." They don't look too bad, but how many of those people are actually wearing it for it's original purpose? I mean come on, high heals? Really?

I think this is creepy looking. I definitely wouldn't wear the jewelry, but I'd wear the tshirt. Only because it reminds me of a one eyed monster
