5 Engagement Ring Trends

Posted by Alexandra C. | Tuesday May 15, 201230 comments

Remember that viral video a few months back, when a lucky lady was proposed to and then proceeded to faint? I suspect it wasn't so much the boy as it was ring. Face it, as soon as you find out someone is engaged, what's the first thing out of your mouth? It's always: "Omigosh, congrats! Let me see the ring!" I mean, Beyonce even centered an entire song around the engagement ring

We will totally admit that while none of us are currently engaged, it's so much fun to ogle at the sparkly rocks! Therefore, a gratuitously gorgeous round up of the top engagement ring trends for 2012 was definitely in order. Enjoy the bling ladies!

Trend #1: Coloured Stones

1. Oscar Heyman Gold & Platinum Padparascha Sapphire and Yellow Diamond Ring (inquire for pricing)
2. Coby Madison 14k White Gold Oval Shaped Black Diamond Ring (on sale, US$2,099.99)
3. Harry Winston Ruby with Micropave Diamonds Ring (inquire for pricing)
4. Harry Winston The One, Sapphire Micropave Ring (inquire for pricing)

Blame it on the princess-to-be Kate Middleton. Since Prince William proposed with that sapphire stone, coloured engagement rings are becoming more popular and mainstream. A coloured gem is a way to differentiate yourself from the pack and to show off individuality.

Trend #2: Emerald Cuts

1. Swarovski Prime Ring (C$180.00)
2. Tiffany & Co Emerald Cut wit Tapered Baguette (C$14,500.00)
3. Tacori Emerald Cut Diamond Ring (inquire for pricing)
4. Passion Fire Love Journey Ring (US$1350.00)

Brad Pitt clearly has excellent taste when it comes to engagement rings. Angelina's ring finger has been decked out in an emerald cut diamond ring and we predict that emerald cuts will be the next big thing for weddings. The rectangle stone is elegant and timeless, perfect for a modern bride with classic taste.

Trend #3: Eco Friendly and Ethical Rings

1. Ruff & Cut Candor Ring (US$6400.00)
2. Green Karat Convergence Ring (US$1375.00)
3. Brilliant Earth 18K White Gold Delicate Antique Scroll Ring (C$955.00)
4. Ingle & Rhode Customized Ethical Diamond Rings (inquire for pricing)

With increased awareness about the diamond trade comes more, ethical and environmentally friendly options for your engagement ring. We love these gorgeous styles that prove you don't sacrifice anything in design or quality when choosing to go this route.

Trend #4: Rustic and Vintage Rings

1. Bittersweets NY Twig Ring Royale (US$6800.00)
2. Nora Kogan Rosey Ring (US$7733.00)
3. Catbird Marian Maurer Ariel Ring with Three Diamonds (US$1200.00)
4. Vintage Ring (via pinterest.com)

You can find less expensive vintage rings at antique stores or even flea markets. I love the idea of having history and a love story behind a ring. If you don't want to get the second hand route though, look for rustic and vintage inspired rings for a whimsical, quirky and romantic feel.

Trend #5: Minimalist

1. Tiffany & Co Tiffany Setting Single Solitaire Diamond Ring (from C$12,100.00)
2. Birks Petite Collection Split-Bezel Diamond Engagement Ring in 18K Yellow Gold (C$1350.00)
3. Tiffany Bezet Round Ring (C$1800.00)
4. Nora Kogan Urte Ring (US$1975.00)

Sometimes, a enormous, 'in your face' stone isn't the best option. There's something to be said for the understated luxury of a smaller, single solitaire ring. We love these simple yet eye catching rings for the bride who wants something sophisticated and tasteful.

After checking out all that glitters, leave a comment and let us know which one is your absolute favourite! Which one of these rocks would you love to see on your finger?

I really like the emerald cut the best, it also looks bigger! I love the personal touch of a colored stone, diamonds are of course beautiful, but there always seems to be more of a story when you ask someone about their colored gems. Usually passed down through generations etc... how romantic! :)

I have always wanted a saphire & diamond combination for my ring, and thanks to Kate Middleton's ring it has become a very popular combination and there are so many options now for my ring.

I really like the replica of Kate Middleton's ring but I wonder if a lot of people will actually purchase it since it's so recognizable and chances are, it won't be worth as much as Kate's. As for the rest, I love ALL of them!

I LOVE coloured stones. On vacation, I saw a Morganite which is a pinky peach stone similar to aquamarine I believe. In a gold band, most beautiful ring ever. Makes me want another engagement ring!
