5 Trending Halloween Costumes for 2012

So, I need to ask you all a very important question: what are you going to be for Halloween? Have you already started planning your costume? If you're like me, you started planning on November 1st. Then around May, you changed your mind. Come August, you found yet another amazing idea and now in October you're a bit stumped. You're looking for something fun, relatively easy and of course, trendy and topical. Well, we have 5 costumes for you that fit the bill.

We love the idea of experimenting with this year's biggest pop culture icons for Halloween. It's just so much fun, you can usually recreate the look with items you already have or that are easily found at any mall.

Costume #1: Honey Boo Boo Child

If you haven't heard of Alana, the self proclaimed beauty queen of Toddlers in Tiaras, I suggest you immediately turn on TLC and sit by that TV until her spin-off series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo appears. She's sassy along with the rest of her quirky family. This show is a serious guilty pleasure for me.

For this costume, you'll need to go big or go home. Get a blonde, curly wig, dress it up with a large flower clip or tiara. Pair it with a sparkly tutu inspired outfit. Basically you need three things: pink, glitter and general over the topness and you'll be good.

P.A.R.O.S.H Sequin Bandeau Top (US$319.69)
Hot Topic Hot Pink Glitter Bow Petticoat (US$19.50)
Forever 21 Spangled Cosmetic Bag (C$6.80)
Claire's Crystal Pageant Tiara (C$28.00)
Claire's Mini Rose Hair Clip (C$4.00)
Target Adult Mythic Goddess Wig (US$24.99)

Costume #2: Snooki + Baby

Snooki's been a hot costume for a few years now. To add a fresh take on the costume, carry around a baby doll and go as Snooki and her baby boy, Lorenzo. Bonus if you can convince your hubby to go with you as her fiancé, Jionni LaValle.

Wear anything tight that shows off your curves! Try a leopard print dress and don't forget your stilettos and long black hair.

Forever 21 Polished Trim Platform Pumps (C$39.80)
Circo Boy Baby Doll (US$9.99)
Target Adult Jersey Shore Wig (US$14.99)
Urban Outfitters Tripp NYC Strapless Fitted Leopard Print Dress (US$39.99, on sale)

Costume #3: Psy of Gangnam Style Fame

This one is more for the gents, but a lady looking for something a bit different could totally pull this off. Psy is the man behind the biggest viral hit this year, Gangnam Style. With almost 500 million, yup, that's right, million hits on YouTube, this costume and the song are hot!

This one is pretty simple, wear a blue suit jacket, button down white shirt and black dress pants. Accessorize with a bow tie and round sunglasses. No need to spend a lot of money either. Try looking in thrift shops or raid your man's (or brother's/guy friend's/dad's) closet. Plus, you can totally do the dance at any party you go to!

Gap Modern Oxford Shirt (C$54.95)
J Crew Satin Bow Tie (US$52.00)
River Island Fisher Blazer (C$166.30)
Thierry Lasry TL VARIETY-1015 Sunglasses (UK$288.00)

Costume #4: Olympians - Fierce Five or Ryan Lochte

Pay homage to the summer olympics with costumes inspired by two of the most buzzed about Olympians (well, 6 actually). Get a group of girlfriends together and go as the 'fierce five' gymnast team. Or, solo it and go as Kayla Maroney and her tradmark scowl. If you are a gent, we like the idea of going as the swimmer and party boy Ryan Lochte

This one is pretty simple, all you really need is a gold medal and a tracksuit. Extra points if you sport a grill like Mr. Lochte.

Gold Medal (US$2.38)
Adidas Women's Fleece Firebird Track Top (C$70.00)
Adidas Women's Firebird Track Pants (C$60.00)
Grillz Platinum Teeth (US$14.99)

Costume #5: Superhero - The Black Widow of The Avengers, Catwoman

Superhero costumes are always popular picks. With two major superhero films being released this past year, we anticipate seeing a huge number of Batman and Avenger team characters on the streets.

What I like about superhero costumes is that you can actually reuse and repurpose a lot of the individual items you'll use. For superheroes like Catwoman and Black Widow (of The Avengers), you need a tight black spandex suit and a simple wig switch changes up the entire costume.

American Apparel Rib Nylon Spandex Legging (US$36.00)
Rubie's Costume Co Batman Dark Knight Rises Secret Wishes Catwoman Wig (C$22.85)
American Apparel Cotton Spandex Jersey Mock Neck Bodysuit (US$40.00)
Marvel's Avengers Movie Black Widow Wig (US$17.98)
Jeffrey Campbell The Jeffrey Campbell x Human Aliens Go Go Boot in Black Washed Leather (C$205.00)

So there you have it chicks. Now let me know what you will be dressing up as this Halloween!

I'm so happy I don't do this any more. I love Halloween, but I never was good at picking a costume out for myself.
