Debenhams Bans Airbrushing

Posted by Cathy | Monday June 21, 20103 comments
The major British department store Debenhams is making its summer swimwear campaign about real women. They believe that the idealistic bodies created by digital retouching makes women feel insecure about their own appearances, so they have decided to BAN airbrushing!

And to take it a step further, they will be showing unretouched images next to the retouched version to expose how far it can go. The above image will front the campaign - check out the unrealistic proportions (right image) that airbrushing has created on this already gorgeous model.

Way to promote positive body image Debenhams!

What do you think about this decision?

I think she looked great in the original picture. The picture on the right looks too perfect to be real.

The thighs also lost nearly 50%, but that job on the waist is quite extreme! It seems she got a boob job as well.

I'm slimmer than average (overall, not in comparison to Torontians or New Yorkers where the average might be a bit skewed), and until a few years ago was extremely happy with my proportions. It's discouraging when, even if you don't have a problem with weight, mags can make even we (supposedly) slender gals feel fat. That's just sick.

What a huge difference on the waist. They should do that more often and show that they admire the real curves, real women and not how they fantasize us women to be and look.
