Nail Art How To: 'V Gap' Tutorial

Half-Moon Manicure has been around since the 1920's but it was pretty much forgotten until the late 2000's when it re-emerged, but more than ever before. A twist on the half moon mani- the V-Shape Half-Moon Mani made an appearance at Spring 2012 fashion week giving this nail trend a modern boost. Since then, it's cousin, the edgier 'V-Gap' manicure has overshadowed the V Shape Mani and it's really picking up steam! Nail artist Sophy Robson is credited with creating this look and we're loving the fact that it is easily recreated and can be altered to give it a little something extra.

We tried out the 'V-Gap' nail art and have come up with four quick and easy steps for you to try out!

What you'll Need:
- A Base and Top Coat, we're using Mary Kay Base and Top Coat
- Nail Polish (colour of your choice), we're using Sephora O.P.I. in 'Screen Test'
- Thin and Pointed Instrument for creating lines (toothpick, orange or cuticle stick)

Step 1: Apply Your Base Coat
Not only is this going to protect your nails but a glossy finish underneath acts as a base coat.

Step 2: Draw Your Outline
Apply some of the nail polish onto your pointed instrument. You're going to draw a 'V' about 1/3 down from the top of your nail. Only, the two end points of the 'V' should not meet.

Step 3 and 4: Fill In With Polish
We used the nail polish brush for this step but if you find it easier, you can try using a small paint brush. Going down from your two lines, simply paint in your nail being sure to leave a gap in the middle of your nail- where the two end points of the 'V' should have met.

The Final Product:
This look is quick, simple and doesn't require many additional tools. At the same time, it is on the avant garde side and looks a lot more interesting than regular polish.

Alternatives:
Try it with another colour underneath as a base coat, or try with a small dot in the middle of the 'V' for something fun!
