People-Watching at Toronto Fashion Week: Classics With a Twist

Posted by Alexandra | Friday April 1, 20117 comments

Getting dressed to attend LG Fashion Week, going on now in Toronto, can mean sacrificing style to be comfortable, or wearing something you absolutely love but that you know will be torture (or just wrinkled) by hour four. These ladies had the right idea of taking classic items—those comfortable easy-to-wear pieces—and giving them their own twist to show their personality.

The romantic feeling created by the combination of the long skirt in a pretty blush hue, the simple overcoat and the gorgeous wide-brimmed hat (for some of our picks for floppy hats, click here). The peep-toe shoes in a rich suede embellished with feathers peeking out under the skirt's hem adds an unexpected element.

A blazer and trousers. Nothing could be simpler. Put that blazer in an uncommon hue like this dusty rose, and pair with pants that are high-waisted with a cropped and rolled cuff and casual pieces are saved from being boring. Pull them together with an oversized scarf, detail-rich cross-body bag and vintage-heels and you've assembled an easy mix of special items.

The trench is a timeless classic and we love it tweaked and tailored as a dress. The two rows of buttons keep the piece from looking overdone or like a coat with the sleeves pulled off, and the angled pockets were clearly not created to hold your keys and phone like a coat. The accessories are kept simple and detail is added with the embellished sleeve of the top.

How do you put your own twist on classic items?

These ladies look great! I adore the floppy hat, the gorg orange blazer, and the styling of the trench dress with the ruffled sleeves poking out underneath! Do I see feather extensions in the hair of the 3rd girl? LOVE IT!

This is definitely more my thing than going crazy with really trendy pieces!

Love that second outfit! I am in awe of women who can wear a hair style like that, it takes commitment and some serious styling skills. Props to her!
