Red Carpet Celeb Makeup Trends

Posted by Alexandra | Tuesday March 1, 20119 comments

Often a barometer of how the runway translates to the mainstream, celebs show us what's really on trend right now.  Last fall, New York Fashion Week predicted bold lips, strong eyes, and natural nudes (a.k.a. makeup-that-looks-like-you're-not-wearing-any-makeup).

While we've certainly seen all of these trends well represented, the front runner at Sunday night's Oscars was simplicity: accessories, hair and make-up all emphasized "less is more".  Natural beauty was the focus, thanks to a simple light coat of mascara, touch of liner, natural rosy cheeks and neutral-glossed lips. Hair also kept with this simplistic trend, as Hollywood's elite looked dashing with their simple 'dos.

Penelope Cruz, Cate Blanchett
Natalie Portman, Gwyneth Paltrow
Scarlett Johannson, Hailee Steinfeld, Michelle Williams

Whose style did you love?

The one who caught my attention was Hailee Steinfeld. It seems to be a rare thing nowadays to see a girl her age look so appropriate in a setting such as an awards show. Her hair and makeup were perfect - and Hailee's dress was so sweet. Adorable!

I think all these stars look like stars! Gorgeous natural beauties. Their dresses make up for the natural-ness of their makeup. But for everyday...natural beauty is great and all, but colours are so much fun! :-) We all can do minimalistic natural beauty when we're older (and bright colours look garish). But right now bright looks gorgeous, so I want to rock it while I still can :-)

@dolce - Ok, it wasn't exactly a pixie cut, more of a bob (like Scarletts), and it was in grade school, and it was blonde, and it will never be seen again ;)

Lauren!! I will definitely have to see pictures of your pixie cut!! I can't picture it on you, but I'm sure you pulled it off!

@mumaluv - Yes, absolutely. In my opinion, I think it's the hair colour that is causing the difference
@dolce - me too.. I did the short hair thing once - bad idea!

I think Gwyneth should have used a little more colour (and I'm not referring to the self tanner - I think she rather overdid it there). I think Cate Blanchett looks younger than Gwyneth here, but I can't decide if it's due to her warm goldeny hair colour (compared to Gwyn's cooler shade) or the little extra colour on the cheeks and lips. Do you know what I mean?

Also, I've got to agree with you Lauren on Michelle Williams' hair. She looks incredible; that do' really does suit her. I've been loving the pixie cuts on celebs lately, but would never have the guts to try it!

I love this minimalistic make-up trend. It really showcases peoples' natural beauty. I'm a little bit over the avant-garde make-up...for everyday anyways. It's nice to see inspiring and artistic make-up in film and runway, but for the street.... I think it is best kept at a minimum!

I know she's had it like this for a while, but I still love this Michelle William's hair, it frames her face beautifully and her eyes just pop, she looked great!

P.s. Hailee is such a cutie pie, I love that her make up is so minimal
