Tip Tuesday: Simple DIY Vitamin C Serum

Vitamin C is great for anti-aging as it brightens skin and helps to reduce lines and wrinkles. Now, I'm not at the whole anti-aging phase just yet, but it has recently come to my attention that my skin loves vitamin C. I just can't get enough of the stuff. For the past little while I have been using a sample of Elizabeth Grant's Vitamin C Day Serum at night ('cause I'm a skincare rebel) before my moisturizer and as soon as I put it on my skin is all: "mmm, yes, thank you so much!". It just soaks it all up and I wake up glowing.
Unfortunately though, my sample is fast running out, so I decided to try and seek out a less expensive and simple DIY solution. And of course, I was not disappointed, because here I am with an easy homemade recipe for vitamin C serum.
Here's what you'll need for the serum:

Oil: The oil acts as a base for the serum. The recipe that I am following calls for (3) vegetable glycerine but because this is the base, you can probably use a soothing, moisturizing, non-comegenic oil. I would also look into (2) castor oil or (1) jojoba oil. These can be found in grocery and health food stores or online.
Tip: You can actually use water instead of oil as well but the consistency will be more of a toner. Also, the Vitamin C can be a bit strong so I would advise to use a soothing oil with it.
(4) Ascorbic Acid: This is the vitamin C powder that is the active ingredient. You should be able to find it at health food stores or online.
(5) Dropper Bottle: You can find these online or simply reuse an old serum bottle.

The trick to making this serum is to find the right proportions. I found this article with a more comprehensive guide to creating the correct proportions for a serum and I recommend checking it out because it can be quite harsh with too much vitamin C.
Here is the recommended recipe:
(1) Mix 1 tsp of vitamin C powder with 2 tsp of glycerine.
(2) Crush the crystals so that it becomes completely dissolved.
Tip: Use a few drops on cleansed skin once a day. If you have sensitive skin then use sparingly.
Are you a serum user? Is this something you would try out?

Thanks for the tip! | |
Wow why didn't I know of this before I invested in a new skincare regime? I love oils and can't say enuff good about Argan Oil, it is just beautiful. Like art. Mix good-for-you-moisturizing oils with vitamin c = genius! I will try this once i'm done my current regime (so in about a few months) :)
Might be cheaper to buy the vitamin c serum rather than buying all the ingredients to make it.
I love this recipe thanks!

I'm currently not a serum user, but I think it's definitely something that's worth trying! Thanks. |
