Makeup Transformation: Tri-Colour Eye Shadow

Posted by ChickAdvisor Team | Monday August 22, 201153 comments

What do designers Zac Posen, Thakoon, Peter Pilotto all have in common (besides all being designers)? They all did tri-colour eye shadow looks on the runway. The look is dramatic and definitely not for a makeup wall flower. We tried it out in a few different ways with bold, smokey and muted tones. We like the look overall, but think maybe it is best left for the club, not the office.

Alexandra’s sunset inspired look comes courtesy of gold, orange and pinky red eye shadows. She used a yellow-gold colour in the corner of her eye as well as below her brow to widen and open her eye. An orange shadow all over her lid and a pink-red in the crease create depth.
Alexandra used L.A. Colors 5 Color Metallic Eye Shadow (US$4.00)

Jenni used blues, pinks and purples in tri- colour look. Her muted colours add a little somethin’ somethin’ without being overpowering. She used her signature cat eye liner to widen her eyes but to match her blue shadow and to add drama, her liner is royal blue.
Jenni used The Color Institute Beauty Balance Complete Face Compact (C$20.00)

Michelle is sparkling like a Twilight vampire in her iridescent tri-colour look. Her three bold colours are toned down in pastels which make them wearable for daytime. We love her choice of deep green, purple and light beige, colours that compliment her skin and hair colour.
Michelle used Make Up For Ever Star Powder (C$20.00)

Put on some Purple Rain by Prince and mauve to the beat (I’m sorry- argh, puns are my weakness!) But seriously, Tammy’s eyes look ten times bigger with her purple and grey combo. She used the lightest purple to widen in the corners, a richer purple in the middle and a grey in the crease. She brushed the shadow outwards then blended to create a seamless look.
Tammy used M.A.C. "In the Groove" Togetherness (C$20.00)

All of these beautiful looks can pass for day or night!
I would wear them all to the office or even for a fresh nighttime look!

Looks like I am alone in my opinion, but I am not really a fan of this look - too much going on and not enough definition.

This is the way I always do my eyes! And sometimes with up to 5 colors
:-) No reason it can't be worn as 'office makeup'. Michelle's is
definitely the best IMO - but Tammy's does make her eyes look a lot
bigger - and she used the exact same colors I often use myself -
greens, purples and a neutral beige of some sort - but I also add some
brownish-plum/dark-plum color in there as well. One or 2 color eye
shadow is boring and anybody can do that. I love blending multiple
colors together and getting a great look from it, like an ombre look,
especially using shimmers and metallic shades, with just a bit of matte
shadow in there to tone it down a tad.

Did my lids/crease/brow bone today using 4 colors out of the Urban
Decay Naked palette, darkened my outer corners with a very deep
metallic plum mineral shadow, and wet-lined with a very dark shimmery
brown with a bit of gold sparkle in it - Nars Galapagos. And then very
lightly lined my bottom lash line half way in with a metallic green
from Coastal Scents Hot Pots to bring out the green in my eyes, which
are blue-green. Two coats of Fresh mascara on top and two coats on the
bottom, but only half way in on the bottom. Looked spectacular and will
probably do it again tomorrow. Would not hesitate to wear the same
thing to any office. It's not loud or over-done and actually looks
quite natural, but brings out a lot more of the colors in my eyes. For
a night time look, I would add more of the plum on the crease mixed
with a deeper green. Have often done this and I love it.

I think depending on how bold a look you choose will determine where it's appropriate to wear it. Lighter hues in multi-tones could definitely still pass in the daytime/office, whereas darker, brighter hues are best for nighttime/going out.

I really like Alexandra's and think it would be good for day/work or even a romantic evening, it's just dark enough for day with the liner because of the gorgeous sunset lightening effect and it's just dark enough for night despite the soft orange colours.
