Sun Worshipper's Survival Guide

Posted by Alexandra C. | Thursday June 13, 20135 comments

I love the sun. Don't we all? Unfortunately, the love is entirely one-sided. My fair-skinned bod skips right past a sun-kissed tawny glow and goes straight to lobster red. If you're a sun worshipper like myself, you surely sympathize.

Let's stop learning our lesson the hard way and get straight to our summer sun guide (i.e. avoiding painful and aging burns):

Sunscreens

Proper sunscreen is your number one defense against burns, premature wrinkles, and skin cancer. If you're going to be out and about in the sun even for a few minutes, it's important to wear a good sunscreen. Check out a few of our current faves and this article on everything you need to know about sunscreen.

1. Green Beaver Certified Organic SPF15 Daily Face Cream (C$22.00)

2. Vichy Capital Soleil SPF 60 Soft Sheer Sunscreen Lotion (C$30.50)

Hats and Glasses

For extra protection from the sun and heat, choose a great pair of sunnies and large floppy hat. Bonus: it can be a pretty chic fashion statement, too. Here are a few options we like for beach bums and outdoorsy chicks.

1. Zara Straw Cowboy Hat (C$29.90)

2. Claire's Sky's The Limit Aviators (C$10.50)

That Jergen's Natural Glow really stinks (as in odor), I got a sample and I had to give it away after one use.

If you do get a bad burn you can use Epson salt and water to cool your skin off. It's cheap and it works!! All you have to do is mix some Epson salt and just slightly warm water together, soak some cloths or even towels depending on the size and area of the burn, ring them out and cover the burnt area. When your skin starts to feel hot again soak your cloths again and just keep repeating this until your burn has cool down. It works great and will make you feel so much better. Once the burn has cooled down enough where you can stand it, apply some aloe. This is a lot cheaper then all those after sun products and I find it works much better. I have some pretty big aloe plants and I just use the aloe right from them. They're a great plant to have on hand.

We always have basic aloe gel on hand for after-sun. We usually just buy the generic - I have usually found it's just as effective.
