6 Tips to Calm Wedding Day Jitters

| Sunday May 16, 2010 1 comment
Saying your “I dos” is supposed to be the best day of your life. It can also be nerve-wracking. Getting wedding jitters is normal. Here are a few tips to keep those butterflies in check.

Take time for yourself
Relax doing things such as Yoga or meditation or breathing exercises.

“Planning a wedding is going to bring out the beast in anyone,” says Angelique Sobschak, wedding planner for Slice’s Rich Bride, Poor Bride. “It’s one of the most stressful times in anyone’s life. Be understanding. Be Patient. It’s okay to ask for medical help if you need it, be it a therapist or actual anti-anxiety medication.”

As a couple, forget about the wedding
Don’t talk about the wedding or deal with anything wedding related for one day. It is all about the love you two have together, and that can’t be “swept under the wedding carpet.” So keep that spark alive.

Have a strong support team
These are people that won’t stress you out and will make you feel calmer when the storms come in. It can be a friend, family member or wedding planner.

Try to understand everyone’s point of view
The bridesmaid spending $500 on a dress, shoes and makeup, the mother-in-law who’s scared she’s losing her only son, and the wedding vendors who have 30 other brides screaming at them - everyone's under stress.

Give yourself time
If you have time you will not feel rushed to make decisions and will feel better about the outcome.

Express your emotions
Don’t be afraid to explain your feelings in a calm and rational way, this way you won’t explode at the proverbial last straw.

“Understand that nothing in this world is perfect, so why should your wedding be. If you expect perfection you will be let down. You can only plan so much, the rest is left up to fate,” says Sobschak.

Do you have a helpful tip for the jittery bride-to-be?

I was really nervous before we got married. Now after 5 great years, I'm wondering what I was so worried about? Were you more nervous or excited about getting married?
