DIY Beauty Guide to Getting Gorgeous Legs: Homemade Scrub and Anti-Razor Bump Spray

Now that summer is upon us, it's time to bust out the shorts and bare those legs! Only, as any girl can attest to, this comes with a whole slew of issues. Most notably, the bumps and ingrown hairs that can arise thanks to the contraption that is the razor. This is doubly annoying if you have sensitive skin like myself. Nothing says 'sexy legs' like ingrown hairs, am I right ladies?

Luckily, exfoiliating your legs, which in turn gets rid of dead layers of skin, can help reduce the amount of bumps you get from shaving. Recently, I went out on a hunt to find a good body scrub to exfoiliate my legs. Only, I was disappointed in what the market had to offer. What was a girl to do except DIY it? It's inexpensive and you probably already have most of the ingredients in your house making it super duper easy. Plus, depending on your personal preference you can create as coarse or smooth as you'd like.

Here's what you'll need for your own scrub:

1/2 Cup Brown Sugar (brown or castor sugar with large granules works best)
1 Tbsp. Honey
Oil (I'm using olive oil, you can use jojoba, grapeseed or any similar oil)
1/8- 1/2 Tsp Witch Hazel 1/4 tsp. Fresh Lemon Juice (i.e. juice from large lemon wedge) or 1/8 Lemon Oil
1-2 Drops of a Fragrance (optional)

Step 1: Combine the brown sugar and honey

Step 2: Add oil

Step 3: Add lemon

Step 4: Fragrance

Step 5: Witch Hazel + Mix

If you want a rougher scrub with more granules, add more sugar, if you want a less rough scrub add more oil.

Step 6: Store in airtight container

In my search for the perfect legs, I came across a product called Tend Skin at Sephora. Tend Skin promises to improve the appearance of razor bumps, ingrown hairs, and redness caused by hair removal. Say, what? They had me 'razor bumps'. I was all set to hand over my money but then I realised that the components in this product were already items I had at home. Basically the components are alcohol, witch hazel and salicylic acid. So, I did a little digging and found this comparable and easy recipe for a DIY version.

Here's what you'll need:

5 Tbsp Witch Hazel (2.5 oz)
1/2 Cup + 1 Tbsp 70% Rubbing Alcohol (apx. 5.5 oz)
26 Uncoated Aspirin (I found packs of 12 Aspirin and used two of these instead)
Spray bottle, mixing bowl

Here's how to make it:

Note: The proportions in this photo are a bit off, the photos are just for sake of ease and showing each step!

1. Pour alcohol
2. + 3. Add the asprin, crush and let dissolve
4. Add witch hazel, mix together and pour into spray bottle

I like the idea of using this in a spray bottle but you could also pour into a water bottle type container and apply with a cotton pad to legs. Before each use, remember to shake it well! Keep in mind that you cannot substitute Advil or Tylenol for the Aspirin because Aspirin contains salicylic acid. As well, this might be a bit strong for some people so you'll want to play around with the proportions. If you find that it stings too much, use less alcohol and increase the witch hazel.

Do you guys also suffer from those unsightly razor bumps? What are your hair removal tips and tricks to get rid of them?

This is an amazing recipe. I've made one very similar in the past. It's very exfoliating and the oil moisturizes. And the sugar doesn't leave you or the shower sticky at all.

Are you all applying this before or after you shave?

Thanks for this article, I will definitely give it a try. I suffer from massive razor burn any time that I shave my upper thighs. I use a loofa in the shower, but it still isn't enough....
