D.I.Y. Decor: Canvas Wall Art

Posted by Ali | Tuesday June 5, 201220 comments

I saw this idea in a design magazine a year ago that I think was Canadian House & Home and it struck me as so stupid simple, even an all thumbs person like myself could do it.  They used it as an accent piece in an upstairs hallway but I bought such a big piece of canvas I only had room for it in the living room.

All of the supplies were from an art store that was having a sale on huge canvases, so for all of the supplies I spent about $50.  I recommend not buying cheap brushes (like I did).  They left little bristles everywhere that I had to remove from wet paint with a tweezer.  Not fun.  I chose two different shades of blue so I could have some contrast. Indigo blue is everywhere these days, isn't it?  I'm not sure I need to explain the steps because it's pretty much what you see.  So let's get on to the before and after, shall we?

I really like white.  I haven't hung anything in my living room since we moved in a year ago because I'm afraid to ruin the paint.  But this is much too much of nothing.

Ta-da! This area now has a lot more personality and when I eventually want to change things up, I can cover the canvas with something else.  By the way, do you recognize that lovely DIY pot?

Would you try this in your home?

I have seen people do something like this with smaller squares, either with similar hues or drastically different ones, then hang them up in groups (2x2s or 3x3s, etc). It can really add a ton of visual interest and everyone assumes you paid big bucks for them!

In my house this would never work. For starters, it would draw attention to the sharpie markings on my walls and rips in my couch cushions. One day, though. One day!

Yes, @ Lorinda it is that stupid simple, which is the beauty of it! This kind of thing looks cool in a hallway or another area with a lot of light. It's just an unexpected pop of colour. The flower and throw pillows were things I already had in my house so the canvas is the only new thing.

If the DIY is painting a canvas blue, thats the easiest DIY Ive ever seen. Looks more like the pillows and the CherryBlossoms added more than the blue canvas.

This is so simple, but makes a huge difference! I love the blue. I did something similar to this a few months back, using smaller canvas squares. I have had numerous compliments on them, it's unreal.

This looks great Ali! What a big difference just a few things can make. That's the pot you showed us how to make last week. I love the flower you have in it.
