Dress to Impress: What to Wear to the Interview

| Sunday May 9, 20104 comments
To your prospective employer, you look great on paper. Impeccable references and a polished resume may get your foot in the door, but come interview time you want to dress to impress.  Does the old saying actually ring true?

According to Suzanne Timmins, fashion director at The Bay, it most definitely does.

“The way in which you put yourself together is an extension of your personality and how you want to project yourself.   The old adage 'the better you look, the better you feel' applies here. If you feel that you look your best you will convey confidence in all that you do.”

“Studies show that 50% of first impressions are formed based on nonverbal cues," explains Timmins. "The way in which you present yourself is very important, especially in the workplace."

GAP White Stretch fitted shirt ($44), Smythe Sharp-Shoulder Blazer ($550), Adam Silk Sleeveless Blouse ($245), Top Shop Frill Pencil Shift Dress ($80)

When purchasing your way to the top, always take your own personal style into consideration but start with the basics.

“Classic pieces like a great tailored trouser or a classic white shirt are key to building a professional wardrobe. Update your look with the trends of the season, but remember to choose wisely. You should feel comfortable in your clothes – wearing something that doesn’t suit you for trend sake is just going to look costume-y.”

Burberry Castlemore cotton-blend pants ($295), Stella McCartney Linen-Piquet Pants ($745), Zara Trousers ($70), K Karl Lagerfeld Buell Wool Pants ($210), BCBG MaxAzria Monica Pencil Skirt ($98)

Remember to think outside of the box.  Updating your look doesn’t always mean changing your clothes.

“This season is all about the pump and we love it in nude.  You will also need a classic tote in a luxurious leather - invest in this timeless piece and you will show them that they should also invest in you.”

(Bottom) DKNY Chain Strap Leather Bag ($345), Burberry Leather Drawstring Tote ($550), Alexander Wang Rocco Tote ($695)

I agree Meguinn that is a perfect interview outfit.

Becky.. I'm sooo tempted to get that bag!!! Think the husband might not be so excited about me buying another bag, though. :(

I personally don't really like the nude colour.. I prefer my shoes to be black, white, or very colourful!

To an interview I would wear..
~A blouse
~A knee-length skirt
~Flats or kitten heels

Something a lot like this:
