Enjoy The Long Weekend in the City

See the city from a different point of view.

Sometimes I envy tourists. They have all the time in the world to meander through little Italy, take in the view from one of our many roof top patios or bask in the beauty of the harbourfront. While the rest of us are rushing to escape the city on a long weekend such as this, the tourists are calmly enjoying the multitude of wonderful things our city has to offer. If you're "stuck" in the city this weekend (or any upcoming weekend for that matter), why not experience Toronto like a tourist?

I was recently inspired by some friends who explore a different neighborhood every weekend. They enjoy breakfast at a cafe in a neighborhood they'd like to get to know, and then spend the afternoon appreciating the shops, architecture and the flavor of that area. With all of the diversity Toronto has to offer, this is a brilliant idea!

Here are a few fun ways to enjoy the city like a tourist:

A Taste of the World offers neighborhood walking tours including Ghost Walks in Haunted Yorkville, U of T & Queen's Park Walk or Food lovers walks such as the Foodies Gaslight Stroll: Rosedale & Yorkville. Prices range from $22 - $43 for adults.

If you enjoy physical activity rent a bicycle, get a map and create your own tour along one of the many cycling paths in the city. Wheel Excitement rents bicycles for a maximum of $30/day.

The Royal Ontario Museum has free admission the last hour of every Wednesday from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm or get Half Price admission on Fridays from 4:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

TO Tix offers discount tickets to day of performances for a variety of theatre, dance, opera, comedy, music and special events.

Every summer I tell my husband we are going to go on one of the available water front cruises. The view of the city at night is stunning.

If you've spent some time recently on the waterfront you have probably noticed the transformation of Mariposa Cruises’ Torontonian into a floating work of art. In Spanish, Mariposa means butterfly and in keeping with the meaning, Toronto graphic designer Wendy Bliss teamed up with local professional artist David Winfield to cover the ship in brightly coloured buterflies. The Torontonian is the first cruise ship on the harbour to be hand-painted by an artist.

Single ticket prices for one of these cruises is $20 + GST for Adults, or grab a dinner cruise for $72.96 + GST per adult.

Whatever you end up doing, take some time to appreciate the city as though you were visiting it for the first time. You will certainly discover some local gems and the best part is you won't be one of those schmucks stuck in holiday traffic on the way home.
