Hot or Not: DIY Press On Nail Polish

Posted by Lauren | Wednesday January 26, 201120 comments
We are seeing more and more creativity and originality when it comes to nailwear. Now, brands are bringing back press-on nail polishes as a chic and easy way to get the salon look at home..

When we received Sally Hansen's Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips, we had to see if the method really is as simple as they claim.

Step 1: Gently push back your cuticles and clean your nails with polish remover.

Step 2: Select the best fitting size for each nail, then peel away the clear plastic and backing.

Step 3: Position it close to (but not on top of) your cuticle and press down firmly to secure.

Step 4: Pull down firmly and carefully along the nail edge.

Step 5: Clean up the ragged edge with a gentle nail file.

This will take longer than you think (allow at least 15 minutes), so take your time and make sure all corners are pressed down tight.  Do not file your nails before applying: save that step for the end for a clean finish.

The Verdict:  Nail strips are a great alternative for a special occasion because the look is smooth and flawless. After wearing them all weekend I found that the polish chipped some on the ends, but stayed securely in place. I would wear this again.

Try these brands currently offering this product (full range of colour options not shown):

Sally Hansen $9ish (this product is brand new in stores)
Sephora by OPI "Chic Prints" or "Glee Chic Prints" $15
InCoco Strips $7.99
Nail Rock Nail Wraps $10ish (Nail Rock is based in UK but ships internationally)

Would you try press on nail polish?

Great questions thetats!

1) There are 16 strips in the packages and the instructions say you can use the strips from either end (so each strip actually has 2 shapes to fit your nail). I've always thought I have pretty small nails so if they fit mine they will probably fit most other little fingers

2) The strips (at least the Sally Hansen ones) are real nail polish so they come off with nail polish remover (no peeling required). The sparkly style that I tried took a little extra effort to scrub off because it had some texture to (similar to other sparkly nail polishes)

Hope that helps :)

this looks like so much fun!

how are the sizes though? what if the width is too big? My nails are pretty small and I am thinking the sizes could be too big :S and how do you take it off ? polish remover or do you have to peel? sorry, I'm so new to this

It was pretty easy...but you need to take your time; I read a couple of blogs online where the testers placed the strips over their cuticles and then they ran into some trouble.
