Luxury Camping: How to Tent in Style

| Sunday July 5, 20093 comments
"Think about it, babe," he pleads. "You, me... in the middle of nowhere with just a tent and a Coleman stove?"

Unfortunately for him, you're more of an indoor gal. Summer camp as a 10-year-old was fun, but the thought of rewarmed baked beans, a lumpy sleeping bag, and a dive in the lake as a shower substitute is just not your thing. Let's not even talk about the, um, call of nature.

Or maybe you're the one trying to coax your metrosexual squeeze into a weekend outdoor getaway? He might not be so thrilled to see your lakeside fish filleting skills in living color. You could be headed for disaster...

Luckily for you, the latest trend in tenting is Luxury Camping - a.k.a. Camping For People Who Hate Camping. We're talking about everything from luxury tent rentals to full-service campsites.

Wood floors covered with Bedouin-style area rugs and throw pillows? Four-poster bed? An onsite chef? Check, check, and (heck yes!) check.

We were recently tempted by some exciting profiles in glamping (glamorous camping):

Middle East
Abercrombie & Kent recreates Lawrence of Arabia's travels, complete with Bedouin tent accommodations, travel by camel and day trips to the Dead Sea and Petra.
11 days, $7200

Canada
Clayoquot Wilderness Resorts' eco outpost features whale watching, horseback riding, a riverfront spa and onsite gourmet chef.
3-7 day trips, start $4700

Africa
See Tanzania, Jane Goodall's old stomping grounds, with Greystone Mahali. Hiking, safaris, and beaching are just some of the available activities.
7 days, from $6300

Tropics
Imagine a secluded atoll in the Indian Ocean, accessible only by seaplane and restricted to 18 guests at a time. The Maldivaru resort offers oceanic outings, snorkelling and serious downtime.

Down Under
Longitude 131° sets you down in the middle of the outback. Hiking, wildlife, and cultural interaction are standard.
2 or more days, from $3200

United States
Kayaking, mountain biking, and horseback riding first, s'mores on the campfire afterward. You can choose from a luxury tent or cedar cabin in the Santa Barbara-area el Capítan Canyon resort.

We agree: if only the butler could do something about the mosquitoes, it'd be darn near perfect. Would you glamp?

Amazing ideas! Not sure if we can call it "camping" when you need to save up for months prior to taking the vacation hehehe Although, that's my type of camping! :)
