Movie Recommendation: Christmas Comedies

Posted by Cathy | Friday December 24, 20106 comments
It's hard to miss the classic Holiday films constantly playing on TV this month.  While we will forever love Home Alone and White Christmas, we highly suggest these sometimes overlooked, but always hilarious Holiday Comedies:

Scrooged:  In this hilarious adaptation of A Christmas Carol, Bill Murray plays Frank Cross, a selfish and cynical TV executive who gets haunted by three spirits on Christmas Eve.

In Elf, Will Ferrell plays Buddy: a human raised by elves at the North Pole.  Buddy is unaware that he is human, but his enormous size and poor toy-making skills set him apart from the other elves.  When Buddy finds out that he is human, he heads to New York City to find his real father - who happens to be on the naughty list.  Completely ignorant to human culture, Buddy experiences the delights of New York City as he throws a wrench in the life of his father.

Love Actually follows the lives of 8 pairs of people in London.  During the hectic few week leading up to Christmas, their lives are loosely interrelated as they all search for love in very different ways.

Nativity!  Paul Maddens, the primary school teacher in charge of the Christmas play is feeling the pressure from a rival school.  He boasts that his ex-girlfriend, a Hollywood Producer, is going to turn his play into a film.  There's just one problem: they haven't spoken in years.  Maddens winds up a local celebrity as he desperately tries to get back in touch with his ex.

Have you seen these movies?  What are your favourite holiday films?

I love Love Actually, too! My favourite is that little kid who was pining after the pretty girl who sang at the pageant. And I have been so busy that I haven't watched a single Christmas movie yet. Not even A Christmas Story :(.

I didn't watch a single Christmas movie this year! Not even one.

My brother bought me the DVDs of Glee's first season for Christmas so all my free time these past few days have been dominated by that...I'm so addicted.

Elf definitely is a little over the top but I like it for that very reason - Will Ferrell is so ridiculous that I can't help but laugh!

Elf is great! But it is a little over the top as Will Farrell's character is naive to a ridiculous extreme. However, it is one of my faves and I would certainly recommend it!

Same here! I love the concept of how everyone's lives are intertwined with each other's :)
I've never watched Elf before.. is it worth watching? I think Will Ferrel's hilarious :)
