Trending in Fashion: The Peplum

As someone who has spent most of her shopping life trying to find items that conceal or reduce her wide hips, the sudden peplum trend leaves me scratching my head. If you're not familiar with the term 'peplum', chances are you may just not know what it's called, but you've definitely seen it before.

Now, I always assumed that peplum died in the 80's along with shoulder pads and acid wash denim. However, just as the shoulder pad came back with a vengeance a few seasons back, now the peplum has been resurrected and seems stronger than ever!

Designers like Yves Saint Laurent and Jason Wu have brought back the peplum in their Spring 2012 shows. Not only are we seeing the peplum in skirts or dress but also in jackets and tops.

Forever 21 Woven Peplum Top (C$25.90), Ribbon Striped Peplum Top (UK$20.00)

Since it's runway debut, I can't go into an H&M or Forever 21 without catching a glimpse of a peplum tee or skirt!

Alice + Olivia Vicky Peplum Dress (C$415.00),  Kenzo Peplum Pencil Skirt (C$675.00)

I don't actually mind the peplum trend; on other people that is. Like I've said, the peplum draws attention to hips and that's not exactly on my to-do list. I say, if you have the confidence to rock a peplum, go right ahead lady! Just take a look at these celebs (Dianna Agron and Emma Stone) who strut it in a peplum!

What do you think of the peplum trend? Would you or do you wear it?

It is super cute, but I don't really think it would be flattering on my body type. I wish it would though, I think I would be more opt to wear it then. :)

I think it's cute but I don't like the way either celeb is wearing it. I would definitely wear this!

I think this look is great BUT looks best on a dress or skirt. I think as a top it makes some of the models look like they're hiding a tummy. The way it's done on the Alice Olivia Vicky Peplum Dress is stunning to me. I love it!

@ShioriM - I see what you mean. Because the flare is so pronounced on VB's version it whittles the waist, and the black colour is slimming overall so I can see how this might actually be wearable for more women. The strong shoulders also give balance to the look which I like. I really don't care for the look in these bright colours though.

Nope this is not for me at all. My but looks big enough on its own, it sure doesn't need any help with something like this. Now if I were part of the walking dead like these poor things are, that would be a different story.

Personally I love the peplum look, but only for skirts/dresses, I never could pull off the ones in jackets or tops. Also being on the straighter skinny side, I do like how it adds some curves to where I lack them loool

I lovee this peplum dress Victoria Beckham designed that a lot of celebs have worn. I think its actually one of the more flattering peplums.
