Canadian Designer Series: Pink Tartan

Kim Newport-Mimran is passionate about everything fashion, couture especially. In fact, her closet reserves most of its space for a rather large couture collection.

The co-founder, president and head designer of Canadian label Pink Tartan, Newport-Mimran pulls her inspirations from successful and celebrated fashion icons such as Chanel, Dior, Pierre Cardin, and Cristóbal Balenciaga to name a few.

“I like old world as well as some of the new emerging designers,” she tells us. “I have favourite collections over time that inspire me or that I just love to wear.”

But she’s by no means a couture designer. Pink Tartan's signature is a collection that embodies elegance and sophistication making each piece a unique gem that can be worn day to day. It’s hip and modern, beautiful and practical.

Newport-Mimran enjoys modern classics - chic clothes and vintage pieces - but she's selective about what ultimately gets her seal of approval.

“A lot of what Pink Tartan is about is my personal aesthetic. I don’t put things in the collection because I think they might sell,” says the 42-year-old Canadian designer. “I only put things in the collection I really feel my customers can wear.”

Since Pink Tartan's New York launch in 2004, it has become one of North America’s most desired lines. Hollywood celebrities Kim Cattrall, Jenny McCarthy, Vanessa Williams, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Kate Hudson have incorporated Pink Tartan into their own personal style.
