Korean Beauty Trend: Are Puppy Eyes the New Cat Eye?

Posted by Alexandra C. | Tuesday September 10, 201317 comments

Cat eyes: we have a love hate relationship with them. On the one hand, they're gorgeous. On the other hand, they're a total b**ch (excuse the French) to do. And while we can go on and on about tips and tricks, the fact is: they're tough. Which is why I'm kind of all over this Korean eye makeup trend called puppy eyes. While cat eyes swerve upwards into a very difficult to accomplish winged shape, puppy eyes taper off downwards, in an almond-like shape. Also, saying puppy eyes sounds super adorable and cuddly.

Having trouble getting the difference? Here are a few expertly done cat eyes for your reference:

And here's the down slopping puppy eyes as modelled by Korean singer and idol Hyuna. She's credited with giving puppy eyes popularity. You might remember her as Psy's costar in the massive sensation Gangnam Style.

Puppy eyes are designed to give you a youthful appearance, with big, round, innocent eyes. I'm all for big eyes so I can totally jump on this trend. I even tried this out one day at work. Not only is it far easier to accomplish compared with cat eyes, but I find it does really make my eyes appear larger and I look more awake and refreshed. I think it's quite flattering on my face as well.

Here's the wearable look on two chicks. I like how you can extend it further and onto the bottom lash (see the picture on the left) or have a more subtle, straight approach (right). I almost think that this seems more natural and casual compared to a cat eye which can be kind of stuffy and over the top at times.

Do you think you'd try this trend out? If you're looking to get that puppy eyed look, here are a few of my favourite products:

1. Maybelline Eye Studio Master Duo 2-in-1 Glossy Liquid Liner (C$11.49)

2. Maybelline EyeStudio Master Precise Ink Pen Eyeliner (C$10.09)

3. Revlon ColorStay Creme Gel Eye Liner (C$10.99)

4. Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner (C$26.00)

5. Marc Jacobs Beauty Magic Marc'er Precision Pen (C$36.00)

Nope! I don't want droopy eyes or anything that drags the eye downward. Looks great on her though... on me it would go against the natural shape of my eye

I'll have to try this to see how it works for me... I like the idea of it being simpler because no matter how hard I try, I cannot master that cat eye!

I already look too young for my age, and I think for me, the cat eye makes me look more mature. Honesty, any makeup makes me look like an 18 year old, which is good, because no makeup makes me look like a middle-schooler.
I actually think the puppy dog look will make me look younger, and also tired. I've already got dark eyes because of anaemia, this may not work for everyone. The K-Pop stars look really cute in them though!

It is cute and looks great on young firm eyelids. We need to find a balance that will enhance young and mature look

Not my cup of tea. This style would only emphasize my droopy corners. But it's cute on these chicks :)
