4 Investments To Make In Your Workplace Wardrobe

Posted by Alexandra C. | Wednesday January 9, 20139 comments

We recently received a forum question from a lovely chick who had some issues with her work wardrobe. Member Tigerlily was wondering what pieces she should be investing in to add to her closet. It was quite a conundrum and we thought what better way to help Tigerlily solve this issue than with an article!

Getting your style act together is a common New Years resolution so we thought many of the chicks could relate and benefit from a quick workplace wear tutorial!

We're going to break down the work wear mystery for you by letting you know the basic pieces that you should have to look professional and to make the most out of your wardrobe.

Invest in: Mix and Match Suit Pieces

If you don't already have one, purchase a three piece suit: a blazer, a pencil skirt and a pair of pants in a basic colour that will go with everything. It might sound boring, but you're going to get a ton of mileage out of this suit. Not only will you be able to wear it all together, you'll also be able to break it up and wear it with the rest of your closet. Look for flattering cuts and interesting detailing like satin trim or a tuxedo style lapel to avoid the cookie cutter business look. A great suit can last a long time so this might be a piece you'll want to spend a little extra on.

1. Mexx Pants (C$99.90)

2. Mexx Tuxedo Blazer (C$199.90)

3. Express Cotton Sateen Pencil Skirt (C$59.90)

Invest in: Sweaters, Cardis and Printed Blouses

Underneath that fabulous new suit of yours you'll want to add a little colour with a cute blouse. I'm a huge print and pattern fan and I think they're a great way to show off your personality. If you are looking for a more subdued look, try a white or neutral coloured blouse with a coloured or printed collar. It's also a way to add some trendiness into a classic outfit. And instead of a blazer, why not opt for a cardigan or sweater? You'll be able to offset your basic black bottom and layering is great for temperature crazy offices!

1. Club Monaco Harley Floral Collar Shirt (C$129.50)

2. Joe Fresh Classic Cardigan (C$19.00)

3. J Crew Cotton V Neck Sweater (C$76.00)

4. Asos Shirt In I Heart Pug Print (C$64.42)

Invest in: Dark Wash Denim

For a more casual business go for denim, but keep it all dark and without too much detailing. This means always leave the rips, whiskering and bleaching for your days off. Denim should be appropriately sized and cut (no low rise). A dark wash denim is also far more slimming and flattering. Pair denim with a more formal top, like a button down blouse (see above!).

1. Loft Denim Leggings in Dark Rinse Wash (US$69.50)

2. Lucky Brand Charlie Baby Boot Jeans (C$119.00)

3. Gap 1969 Always Skinny Jeans (C$54.99, on sale)

Invest in: Accessories

We've mentioned many times that accessories can take any basic outfit to the next level. So if you're looking to spruce up your existing outfit on a budget, look into purchasing some fabulous accessories. Go for luxe fabrics like leathers for a more upscale feel.

Solid colours and neutrals get a boost with pops of colour. And always look for a statement piece in any outfit you wear. It brings personality to a ho-hum suit and gives a focal point to your outfit.

For summer, avoid flip flops and sandals with too much toe cleavage. Instead try a more professional and put together ballet flat. For winter, tall boots are perfectly acceptable. Just keep your heel length low and the boots should be a classic, riding style below the knee.

1. H&M Dress (C$39.95)

2. Anthropologie Blooming Fondant Bib Necklace (US$48.00)

3. Aldo Romelia Heel (C$90.00)

4. Browns Couture Boots (C$299.98)

5. H&M Bag (C$49.95)

6. Zara Studded Heel Ballerina (C$19.99)

1. J Crew Bangles (C$39.50)

2. Joe Fresh Patent Pump (C$69.00)

3. Fossil Natalie Stainless Steel Watch (US$145.00)

4. Reitmans Long Sleeve Shirt (C$27.99)

5. Steven by Steve Madden 'Ravesh' Pump (C$154.07)

6. Danier Style # 131011150 (C$129.00, on sale)

The 3 piece suit was indeed a great investment for me. It lasted way more than I expected it.

I would add a 3 inch heels boots for fall. Fall is too cold for that sexy office 3 inches shoes.

I would add more black long sleeves, and white long sleeves, plus necklaces to accent it. With so many business meetings, the colorful shirt might not work. White and Black are good palette to build one...just add the necklace earrings from pure business meetings to business and pleasure.

Okay that watch is a must. I have a citizen two tone, with 50WR. Good for the office, plus you don't have to take it off when washing the dishes at home. Best investment ever.

Love the pencil skirt, I have them in 3 colors: black, off white, and pink. if you got the legs, this is a powerful statement!

These are fantastic staples! The 3-piece suit idea is indeed fantastic, having everything in standard black or dark grey is a great way to make tons of outfits with little effort (perfect for someone like me who hates mornings and has never been one to 'lay out' an outfit the night before).

I find matching pumps with any outfit is an easy way to dress it up.

The 3-piece suit idea is awesome! You can make so many outfits with just that one suit. I also really love the look of dark denim. It looks trendy and fashionable, but still can be very casual.
