Prom or Night Out Smokey Eye Tutorial: Photo Friendly Makeup

It's that time of year again- prom season is upon us! While we may be out of school, we know a few of you chicks out there are gearing up for that special night. With that in mind, we decided to prepare a gorgeous, attention grabbing smokey eye that will really make those heads turn.

If you aren't one of the lucky ones attending your prom, this look is equally as fabulous for any special occasion or night out. It's dramatic, but by using taupes and browns we've toned it down to make it wearable even for daytime. The best thing about this look is that it is photo friendly. This means that it highlights your best features and avoids any light reflecting products which in pictures can make you look oily.

Ready to start the party?

Step 1: Prep and Prime

Moisturize and prime your skin, if you tend to have oilier skin, use mattifying products to reduce this. Apply your foundation and concealer as you normally would.

Next, apply your blush. For a long lasting complexion, we're using a pigmented cream blush. We like Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Cream Blush (C$30.00) for this.

Now to the eyes, the focal point of this look. First, use a base colour all over your lid to help enhance the colours of the shadows and keep the colour longer. We're using Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadow (C$8.49)

Step 2: Shadows, Part 1

This step is all on the eyes and using shadows to bring them out. For every step, we used shadows from the Urban Decay Naked Palette (C$60.00)

First, use a blending brush and apply a darker, taupe colour in the crease on the outer corner of the eye. In this section, we used the shade Darkhorse. Then, using a flatter and wider eye brush, highlight the brow bone to widen your eyes. For this we used the shade Virgin.

Step 3: Shadows, Part 2

In the inner corner of your eye, use a shiny, light, metallic shadow. We're going with the shade Sin. Pack this on and blend through the mid section of your eye. Bring the colour into your tear duct as well.

On the bottom and close to your lash line, use a thinner brush to lightly sweep on any darker shade. We decided to go with Sidecar for this, it's  a mix between taupe, brown and purple with hints of metallic.

Step 4: Liner

To give your eyes definition, apply a liner close to the lashline and not too thickly. Line your top lid and on the outer half on the bottom. We used Lancome Ink Artliner Gel Liner in Carbon Black with a small, thin brush.

Step 5: Lips

We wanted to give a punch of colour to this look so we decided on a rosy pink lip. We liked Lancome French Touch Absolu Lipstick #316 (C$35.00) which turns into a light and soft baby pink on. Over this, we put Annabelle Big Show Lip Shine in Smile (C$9.50), be sure to apply a gloss like this in the cupid's bow and on the bottom to really make your mouth appear sumptuous.

The Final Look

As a final step, set your makeup with a translucent powder. We dusted on a light coat of Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder (US$32.00) with a big fluffy brush.

I obviously couldn't go to the prom with my hair pulled back in any regular old messy bun. So, Mandy pulled some of her hairdressing magic out and whipped up this amazing hair style.

First, she took a section in the middle, at the front of my hair, french braided it and tied it off with a pony tail. Next, using a large brush, she pulled the rest of my hair in a ponytail at the top of my head. We back combed this, and loosely wrapped it around making a bun and tied it with an elastic. We secured the entire look with bobby pins and some hairspray.

Other products we used and recommend for this look:

1. Revlon PhotoReady Concealer (US$9.99)
2. Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation (US$42.00)
3. Rodial Dragon's Blood Cleansing Water (UK$25.00)
4. Vichy Normaderm Pro Mat Ultra-Mattifying Oil-Free Lotion SPF 15 (US$22.00)
5. Hard Candy Glamoflauge Concealer (US$6.00)
6. Covergirl Lash Blast Mascara (C$9.99)
7. Maybelline Illegal Lengths Mascara (US$7.16)
8. Korres Pomegrante Mattifying Primer (US$33.00)

Is this look something you'd try out? What did you do for your own prom or what are you planning on doing? Also- all embarrassing prom stories are very welcome, please and thanks!
