Vintage Inspired Makeup Tutorial: The Winged 'Cat Eye'

Whether you're a makeup pro or a minimalist, cat eyes are a simple and easy addition to your make up routine no matter what your mood. The thing I love about cat eyes is I can create simple ones for a nice every day look or try different kinds to get a more vivacious look.

The Right Tools

Liquid, Pencil or Gel? If you're trying this for the first time or even if you're a pro, the kind of liner that you use will depend on the type of look you're trying to achieve.

If you're going to use a pencil liner, I suggest using one with a sponge bottom to help you smudge and soften and create a better cat eye.

Gel liners are easy to use and apply and give a more pigmented look. I suggest an angled brush when using gel liner.

Liquid liners take practice, but once you get the hang of creating cat eyes with them, it's like riding a bike.

Here are some of the liners we suggest for creating the purrr-fect cat eye.

1. Maybelline Master Precise Ink Pen Eyeliner (C$9.29)
2. Annabelle Smudge Paint (C$10.95)
3. Lancome Long Wear Calligraphy Gel EyeLiner (C$28.00)
4. Kat Von D Tattoo Liner (C$22.00)

1. Clarins 3-Dot Liner (C$28.00 , available August 2012)
2. CoverGirl LineBlast 24H Eyeliner (C$10.99)
3. L'Oreal Carbon Black Lineur Intense Felt Tip Liquid Eyeliner (US$8.49)
4. Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Eyeliner (C$26.00)

Don't forget, practice, practice, practice. Achieving the perfect cat eyes may at first take some time and patience, but once you get the hang of it and find what works best for you, you'll be a pro in no time!

Now that you have the right tools here are four ways to wear your cat eyes.

Look #1

This is an easy every day look I often wear using just a liquid liner with a soft, small winged tip.

Look #2

This is a thicker and bolder cat eye with a long winged tip. This can also be worn as an everyday look if you want a really bold eye or as an evening look. Just like look #1, it's very versatile.

Look 3

For this look I used an angled brush with a gel liner as well as a liquid liner. I lined the bottom of my eye with a thin liner half way to have a double winged look. To complete this look I added a soft thin line of dots to pump up the drama of this look.

Look #4

For this look I extended the cat's eye at the end as well as at the beginning of my eye.

What do you think of these looks? Would you wear any of them?

Vintage is so hip right now, my daughter is looking for back to school cloths that I use to wear in the 80's. It's to funny !! Also her and I have been practicing these exact eye styles with eyeliners for her new look. I have always worn my eye makeup eyeliner on the top, and sometimes top and bottom. These styles are hip and trendy, thanks for this article. My daughter and I are even more inspired. Personally I like look # 1 for myself, for everyday, but may try a couple of the others when hitting the town. You chicks Rock !!

I like look 1, the others would look good for dramatic effect but I don't think I would wear look 2 or 3 on a day-to-day basis...

I'll keep it simple with #1 the next time I do a cat eye :)

I love cat eyes. I do them all the time, more like the first look, but a tiny bit longer. I use liquid eyeliner to do it.

I love the look of the winged cat eye. Just not on me. haha I just don't think it looks good with my eyes. Which is a shame because it's so simple and quick!! haha :)

I like the first one, but the others are a bit much for me. I think they'd look nicer on younger women, but that's just me.
