My Pregnancy Diet (a confession)

Posted by Ali | Thursday February 3, 201117 comments

Before I say anything that might get you supermoms out there all judgey on me, let me just start with this disclaimer: I am a very healthy person.  I am.  Before Baby, I wouldn't touch a french fry.  Or anything with too much sugar, too much salt, anything artificial and certainly not anything with hydrogenated oils and other evils in it.  I was the nerd at the grocery store reading the nutritional label on everything I put into my cart.  Which was mostly vegetables and fruit.  Pinky swear!

Now that I'm 'glowing and growing' (we'll call it Getting Fat) my diet has somewhat changed.  It actually scares me a little to write it down, but here I'm doing it for the benefit of those who haven't yet been pregnant  but have been lied to by women who have had babies and forgotten that they too scarfed down a box of donuts on occasion while under the throes of hormonal imbalance.

Behold my GF diet:

Breakfast:
Toaster Waffles - 4ish with cottage cheese and maple syrup and sometimes also jam.

2nd Breakfast:
Chocolate Croissant.  And also a chocolate chip muffin.

Snack before lunch:
Latte. To stave off the hunger pains I already feel at this point

Lunch:
Pasta, salad and possibly some Reese Peanut Butter Cups. Mmmmm!

2nd Lunch:
A sandwich and/or another croissant.  Or like yesterday, 2 donuts.

Getting home snack:

1 or 2 Grapefruits (I'm obsessed with them)

Sitting on the couch waiting for someone to feed me snack:
More Reese Peanut Butter Cups.  Mmmm!

Dinner:
Whatever my Baby Daddy made me that my stomach can handle since nearly all smells gross me out. It's usually chicken.

Dessert:
Chocolate ice cream

Bed time snack:
Bowl of cereal

I've started seeing a Naturopath and she wants to me share this list with her but I fear her judgment so I might have to lie a little.  Which part should I leave out?

XO, Mommy-to-be

Wow there is some really great advice here, thank you guys so much!

@LaurenBlair - the grapefruits are one of the only good things I'm eating so I won't leave that out, LOL!

@Creamsicle @cathy3087- thanks a lot. now I want those things!

@make-up junkie - I'm always so happy for moms to be who say they crave healthy things. I don't really crave too many things, I just find anything with a decent amount of flavour grosses me out, which is why I like plain things.

@Becky - thank you very much! You're too sweet. And I totally laughed out of my nose at your comment about the muffin.

@At Home with Kim Vallee - you make some really solid points and you are right about the diabetes. I always have that at the back of my mind. I love some of your suggestions of what to eat, like the bananas with the cereal. But the fish really grosses me out. I know I should eat it, I just can't bare it right now. I'm hoping soon I will be able to as I've just started my 2nd trimester.

As a 36-week pregnant woman, I are well aware on the sweet urge but you need to be careful to not get the pregnancy diabetes with all the sugar you consume. I eat some dessert or have a chocolatine once in a while for a snack but for the rest, I maintain a balanced diet.

I usually eat cut fresh fruits, an orange and an apple for snacks. As a general rule, I invite you to try more varieties in your diet. My first advice is to increase the fiber content in your diet. I usually eat for breakfast a big bowl of All Bran cereals mixed with a little bit of organic muesli and one banana. This will sustain your hunger longer than the waffle. Plus, your breakfast already takes care of one of the 4 dairy product portions that are required on a daily basis. Eat 175 mg of probiotic yogurt daily (equivalent of one dairy portion) - this is to reduce the risk of yeast
infection which is more common during pregnancy
. A few times a week, replace the chicken by some fish or seafood (if you do not like the smell, go to the restaurant) and some eggs with vegetables.

Love these mommy to be entries, So much fun to read!!

I agree with mamaluv, you shouldn't hide a thing. You're eating for two during the most unnatural of natural times in your life (a whole entire human being is growing inside you!!) so to anyone who dares judge you - just smile at them as you seductively down a caramel muffin lol :)

I think your Naturopath will understand that you had a few bad cravings. It's normal and it happens. I think if there's a good balance of nutritious meals and a few bad (but oh-so-good) treats you'll be fine. Plus if you're active it's all good. Me on the other hand? I'm eating better now than my pre-pregnancy days, but I won't lie. I have downed a bag of sour cream chips on a few occasions and maybe a cupcake or 2 (or 3...). Thankfully I crave yummy fruits just as much! Now I totally want a Reese's Peanut Butter cup!! LOL

There is a chocolate caramel muffin?! As if there aren't enough things to temp me in the Tim Hortan's display window.

I just finished 2 huge pieces of toblerone and a big glass of chocolate milk (my pregnancy weaknesses)! Don't feel guilty - you will mostly crave what your body needs. I find once I start eating veggies and dip or a salad, I just can't stop - but I never actually feel like eating them to begin with ;)

Those donuts in the picture just reminded me that I've been meaning to try the new chocolate caramel muffin from Tim Hortons.....mmmm

Dear Mommy-to-be: let the Naturopath go ahead and get all offended ;) Everyone cheats a little while they're pregnant, and you do have many healthy things on that list to counterbalance a little indulgence.

You're also burning a lot of calories just by gestating your little one. So phooey on anyone who tries to give you a hard time!

The chicken, grapefruit, cottage cheese and salad are pretty much the only healthy things on the list so I'd focus on that!
