Lipstick Makeover: Transform an Everyday Look with These 7 Shades

Posted by Alexandra C. | Thursday June 28, 201221 comments

It's my personal belief that one can never have too many lipsticks. Because just when you think you've seen everything, along comes another lipstick shade or product that blows everything you've ever tried out of the water. So clearly, you need to get your hands on it.

I've been busy building quite the lipstick collection these past few months. I've been experimenting with everything from corals to nudes to goth inspired purples. The one thing I have noticed is how one lipstick colour can completely change your entire look and also, the way you feel. When I'm getting for work, I automatically reach for a sheer, light coloured pink gloss or lipstick. However, when I'm prepping for a night out with friends, I always go with a trusty burgundy or deep magenta. It just feels right and it matches my mood.

With this in mind, I decided to test out how lip colour changes a basic makeup look.  First, here I am with my 'everyday face'. On my face, I have on: foundation, concealer, blush, bronzer and highlighter. On my eyes, I am wearing: Eyeshadow, black eyeliner, white eyeliner to highlight and mascara. I'm wearing only lip balm on my lips. If you want to get a better sense of what I am wearing, check out my Before and After Makeup Transformation.

Before: with lip balm only

I'll be applying these 7 lip colours:

1. Rimmel London Lasting Finish by Kate Lipstick in #04 (C$5.99)
2. L'Oreal Colour Riche Caresse Lipcolour in 172 Blushing Sequin (C$12.99, available July 2012)
3. Joe Fresh Matte Lipstick in Fuchsia (C$6.00)
4. Wet n' Wild Mega Last Lip Color in 24 Carrot Gold (US$1.99)
5. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Sultry Sable (C$8.79)
6. Elizabeth Arden Exceptional Lipstick in Autumn (US$19.50)
7. NYX Round Case Lipstick in 509 Narcissus (US$4.99)

Lipstick #1: Rimmel London Lasting Finish by Kate Lipstick in #04

Talk about starting off with a bang! Yes, yes I am wearing purple lipstick and thank you for noticing. What do you chicks think of this bold look? I will admit it wasn't my favourite, but the more I look at it, the more I kind of like it. Thoughts?

Lipstick #2: L'Oreal Colour Riche Caresse Lipcolour in 172 Blushing Sequin

I've actually been wearing this colour a lot lately to work. The lipstick itself is awesome and I like the natural colour, glossy finish of it. It's really nice to wear at work or just on a lazy weekend.

Lipstick #3: Joe Fresh Matte Lipstick in Fuchsia

I love the matte finish of this lipstick. It isn't as bright as you'd expect a fuchsia to be either, making it a good compromise for the day time. I like that it's a pop of pink against my neutral eye makeup.

Lipstick #4: Wet n' Wild Mega Last Lip Color in 24 Carrot Gold

Bright orange lipstick. Is it weird that I actually like this look? I think it goes quite nicely with the browns I have on my eyes and I recently lightened my hair for the summer and I think this picks that out really well. Not sure if it's wearable though, what do you think?

Lipstick #5: Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Sultry Sable

This lipstick is actually something of a signature colour for me. I've worn it on the site quite a few times before (flashback here and here and here). It's my go-to night out with the ladies lipstick. It's sultry and it's a twist on a classic red.

Lipstick #6: Elizabeth Arden Exceptional Lipstick in Autumn

This is an old lipstick I had lying around but I've never actually worn it (proof that I seriously need to start shopping my stash). I love a bold red lip, but always find that it looks out of place on me but I do really like this red colour. It's much colder and has tints of blue and purple with I think suit me more than coral or pink red. I love that my lips have become the focal point with this red lip.

Lipstick #7: NYX Round Case Lipstick in 509 Narcissus

This is my least favourite colour out of all of the lipsticks I tried. I bought this lipstick a few months ago and I have yet to wear it for a full day because I can never quite pull it off. I'm not sure if it's just that it clashes with my skintone, or that it's just too pale for my tastes or if it's that it doesn't match my brunette hair but there's something about it that doesn't sit right with me. What do you think?

Let me know what lipstick you think works the best for me or which one is your favourite. And leave a comment with your favourite 'go-to' or signature lip colour!

LOVE number one... I'd wear most of them myself. I'm a little shy so wearing number one is a "want to do", not a "have done it" yet... and the orange and light lilac are either too bright or too light for me. I'd wear orange but maybe a bit toned down.

2 is the best, 1 actually looks AWESOME, it's striking at first but it really works with your hair and your eyes, definitely not a summer day look but maybe an evening? 3 is also cute, I like the matte finish.

I love the natural pinks. Everything else, IMO, is for nighttime! :D

2, 3, & 7 are very pretty shades and look great on you! I can't pull off dark lipstick at all. I've been loving more coral shades lately.

Also I totally notice how the lipstick completely changes the whole look. Like in #1 your attention is drawn to your lips of course and you notice your blush more. In # 2 it totally brings the attention to your eyes. In # 4 it actually brings out the color in your hair. Its cool how you can totally change a whole look by one small thing.
