Boho Maxi Dresses Under $50

Posted by Siofan | Monday May 16, 20118 comments

It seems like every summer the Maxi dress comes back around—do you shout for joy or run the other way? Worried you'll get lost in the length? If you find one that fits right, the maxi can be flattering, and there's nothing more comfy on a summer's day. If you're ample up top, try a tank style (so you can wear a bra) or a halter top that has a supportive band underneath. If you're shorter, go for one with an empire cut so when you get it hemmed the proportion isn't thrown off. A boho-print maxi dress in a  smaller print won't overpower, no matter what you're size. These six maxi dresses are all under $50, so you can try out the style without too much of an investment.

H&M Dress (C$34.95); LABoutique Marly Maxi Dress (US$44.00); Forever21 Abstract Print Strapless Maxi Dress (C$27.80)

H&M Dress (C$29.95); Forever21 Striped Maxi Tank Dress (C$12.00 sale); Roxy South West Dress (US$49.50)

I saw one that I really like at Suzy Shier but I didn't end up getting it because it was obviously too long. So I'm wondering...where is the dress supposed to end? Like are they supposed to go all the way and touch the floor or stop short at the ankles or somewhere in between?

@Takoda, I know exactly what you mean! I'm at 5'1'', if not shorter, and I swear I get stockier by the day! I have a problem with wearing a dress that will be cinched at a waist far too high or low than my own, which makes me look pretty wide. I hate that! and since I'm not one of those size zeros, I have to really watch for what will make me seem smaller, but not shorter.
Adding on to Siofan's advice, I found lace really works well to build texture on myself...I try to keep the lace as close knit as possible (rather than big gaping holes, more like smaller patterns of lace)
Let me know too if you find something that looks great on you! :)

@takoda I know it's a tough one when you're petite. I think the old rule of vertical stripes still holds true (like the Roxy one above), they do make you look longer. Also, chevron patterns can be good. Stay away from too full skirts, you'll look lost in all that fabric! They likely won't make you look taller, but make sure you get one that cinches in at the ribs, you'll look leaner which helps with looking longer. Let me know if you try some on and find one you like!

I really
like them because they are very comfortable especially in the hot summer, but I
haven’t had one for years. I think the last one I even had was a maturity one
witch made me look like a circus tent. LOL I also always felt like they made me
looked shorter then I already am. I’m only 5’4” and shrinking. LOL So if I did
go for one this year I’d probably go for one that’s all one colour. That is
unless you know witch print could make me look taller with out having to wear
heels. Any thought on that one Siofan??

Whenever I see someone wearing a maxi dress down the street, I see heads turn everywhere. It's not often that you see a summer dress worn long!
These dresses look so pretty, particularly the Roxy South West Dress!
I agree with Tammy, these are definitely for the taller girls.

I absolutely LOVE these dresses. They always look so ridiculously long on the racks so I think most people will probably need to hem them (especially me since I'm quite short lol). I do think that they look better on taller people though.
