Ashtanga Yoga Centre of Toronto may be the new kid on the yoga studio block, but the people behind it know their stuff. Co-owner and teaching director David R has collected quite a following of students over the years, with many dedicated souls travelling clear across the city in the early morning hours in order to practice in his morning mysore-style classes (where students do their own self-practice while receiving individualized instruction from the teacher). There's good reason for it. David has a knack for knowing exactly what each student needs. He runs a tight ship -don't expect to get away with lazing through the boat pose!- but is always at the ready with a funny joke and a smile to keep things light and is extremely patient as you learn the ropes of this challenging style of yoga. If the early morning classes aren't your bag, there's a full complement of classes in the evening, including classes where students are guided into each pose by the teacher (known as "led classes) for those of you who prefer that. Ashtanga vinyasa yoga is known as an extremely athletic style, with practitioners quickly flowing through a set series of increasingly demanding postures. All of the teachers at the AYCT are well-versed in working you hard, but within your limits, making the practice accessible for all. Expect to leave each class with a total body workout and a calm and focused mind.
