I was a dedicated customer at JC Salon for approximately 7 years. Their aestheticians (Georgetta is quite good in fact) and hair stylists (Amanda) are okay, but their colorists (Tracey) are terrible and customer service (the manager at the front desk) is horrid. Here is my experience:
After years coloring my hair at home, I decided to take the plunge and spend the money on professional coloring services as my grays were getting out of control. I was assigned to Tracey, who was from day one very nice and chatty but not so skilled at her colorist job. Even though I showed her pictures of the exact shade of dark/rich brown (eg Salma Hayek color) I wanted to color my hair I continually left my appointments with an odd brassy tone.
After a few months Tracey suggested highlights as I was still unsatisfied with the shade of brown she was giving me and I said sure. After the highlights, not only was my hair no where near what I was hoping for but instead I felt like a skunk because of the large streaks of bleached hair on my head! I was visibly upset and told Tracey and the manager, only to have them try to console me with a false "you look beautiful" comment and that they can fix it at the next appointment!
Fast forward a few more months and the final straw for me: I am at the salon getting my 6-week color touch ups. Tracey suggests a toner and of course I'm desperate at this point, hoping against hope that this will lead me to that elusive dark/rich brown color. And guess what? Tracey FORGETS me, and leaves me with toner in my hair for waaaay to long. My hair turns a brassy pink!!! She then attempts to literally SCRAPE the excess toner out of my hair with some kind of brush that leaves my hair broken and brittle. I leave stunned, visibly shaken, and on the verge of tears (because despite the scraping I still ended up with brassy pink hair) but they do not apologize. Nor do they even offer to fix the mistake/disaster for free. They only offer an awkward and again false "you look beautiful" statement as I walk out the door for the last time.
It has now been almost a year since I've visited JC Salon. I've had to cut my hair shorter than ever before in my life, and at this point it will likely take me 3 years to grow back the length of hair I once had. I will obviously survive, but I really hope that these reviews will help them see they need to provide better training for their staff and adopt more courteous customer service practices. Hope springs eternal I guess...
Be warned!
I've been going to JC salon for years now but I've had to take a break as of late. The artists are very talented but not all are warm and inviting.
The reason I left in the first place was the owner herself. She works up front and takes payment from all the customers. I could not stand the way she spoke to people or how rude she was with me. She never thanked me for my business nor did she make me feel welcome and I could no longer keep giving her my business.
I decided to give the place one last try and sure enough she did the same thing she always had.
I once asked my colourist why she was always there or why she was out front? The answer was and should make it clear as to why she is the way she is..........."She does not trust anyone to take the money". Well that is not a place I want to give my money too. I can just imagine how she treats her staff and I can not condone that behaviour.
I will not be returning to JC ever again and nor should anyone else.
I rarely ever leave reviews. The service has to be either incredibly good or the most horrific ever for me to do so. In this case, it was the latter. I have super fine long hair that has always curved inwards. I wanted a trim to even out the ends and I told the hair stylist to cut the hair in a way that encourages the ends to curve inwards. I was clear that I don't blow dry my hair and that it just naturally does what it needs to do. She looked at me puzzled and then nodded. She blow dried my hair for 45 minutes insisting that it had to be dry and that I had to stand up for the cut (because I guess she didn't want to raise the chair?). The haircut took 5 minutes, and $80 later I walked out with hair flat as a pancake and the ends curving any which way. I went home to wash it and the ends look disastrous. I went in with hair that looked healthier and was less unruly than what I walked out with. I will never go back here and I don't recommend this place to anyone. I now have to go to another salon to get a proper trim.
I have to say, after many costly visits to the "best" salons in Toronto I have never been happy with my hair color. I went to JC Salons this past week and I had my hair colored with Meghan and cut with Dina. These two women are so professional, educated and made me feel so beautiful and important while visiting the salon. The dialogue they chose while consulting with me was so professional and confident that I knew this had to be good.
For the longest time I've aimed for a beautiful cool brown color with a nice soft ombre look towards the ends. Everywhere that I have gone I still see warmth(gold and red tones) in my brown and the ombre always seemed to be to contrasting as well as mustard yellow or that ashy toned look that ends up washing away and looking yellow after 1 week. MEGHAN is AMAZING! My hair is definitely a cool brown, my ombre is neutral and the best thing of it all is that she educated me about my color while she was doing it. My hair has never been so shiny and healthy looking after a color before and she recommended the best home care products for me to maintain my cool toned hair. I am in love with my color for the first time in many years!
Dina gave me such a beautiful cut, it looks super healthy and just like I asked she kept my length and was able to give my hair some shape and style without crazy layers. She also taught me how to style my hair and what products to use which is awesome because I always have difficulty styling my hair after getting a new cut.
I am so pleased with my hair and anyone who wrote these babad reviews I apologize to those that read them. If there were issues in the past there definitely isn't anymore. JC salons is very busy salon but everyone is super welcoming and helpful! It's just hectic because it is busy but upstairs is nice and quiet for those who enjoy a more peaceful atmosphere! I will definitely recommend this salon to those seeking the best colorist in Toronto! Hands down this chick Meghan is humble and a genous with hair color!
I've gone here many times before and I think I have finally had enough. The woman behind the counter is not only the manager, she is one of the OWNERS. The last time I went in to ask for a fringe trim and she ignored me for 5 minutes while she worked out tips on a piece of paper. Then she asked me to wait, which is fine, but forgot about me. I went back to her 15 minutes later and she didn't look up but yelled that she knew I was still there and that I needed to relax. Oddly, I sat back down and didn't leave. Then she yelled "Hey, last of the Mohicans here needs a fringe trim!" to some guy. So, so embarrassing...and offensive. I left.
I've been here twice and so far so good! The service is great. Everyone is very friendly and I've found the stylists I've used so far (Darren colour/highlights and Dina for the cut) really good. I also had a great blowdry from Ashley. The front desk had initially recommended Craig and Johanna to me so I may try them at some point as well.
I've gotten compliments on my hair since going here. I am quite happy about the fact they are open on Sundays, which is a huge convenience to me now that I have 2 small kids on top of ChickAdvisor. The atmosphere is very friendly, relaxed and super helpful. Francesco will go out of his way to make sure you have the right stylist and recommend any hair products you may need, but not in a pushy way.
I find the price reasonable given the results and I will definitely keep coming back.
I don't know why there are so many harsh reviews here. This is a great salon. I went here for a number of years before I moved. There are a lot of stylists and it's always very busy here, which speaks to it's popularity.
I dealt with the owner several reviews are referring to many times and never had an issue with her. In fact in my experience the staff are all very concerned about making sure their clients are happy. I tried a number of salons in Bloor West Village and JC salons is by far the best.
I feel bad for them to see some of these negative reviews as those did not reflect my experience there at all.
I have had my hair done at JC a few times, and always been satisfied but never fully happy with it. My last visit, however, was a disaster.
I had a short discussion with the colourist, who I had seen before, and described what I wanted. I thought she understood, but the colour came out several shades darker than the light ash blonde highlights I had asked for. It was light brown with golden highlights that were brassy and stringy. We discussed it, and she told me that I wouldn't be able to get the colour that I wanted in one visit. That was not what we had discussed during the consultation and I didn't understand why she didn't tell me that in the first place.
She agreed to add more highlights, and she did but seemed annoyed and frustrated at having to. She did a sloppy job and I had 1/4 inch of root showing in some places when she finished. She also didn't put toner on, and my roots were bleached while the rest of my hair much darker. It looked terrible and I was very upset.
I told the colourist and then the manager (the older woman at the cash register) about how much I disliked it. The manager was hostile and condescending toward me, and made it sound like I was being difficult, as if it was my fault that I was so unhappy with the colour. The manager has always been rude, but this time it was over the top. Finally, I was told to come back a third time the next week to have the colour fixed. They charged me full price, which was over $250 for highlights and a cut with an intermediate colourist and stylist - way more that what the cut and colour are worth.
I went back to the salon the next week and the colourist put toner on - that was it. It looked slightly better, but still quite terrible. In the end I left the salon very upset and angry for wasting so much money for colour I would have to get redone.
I will never go to JC again. I expected a lot more from the salon that calls itself the #1 salon in Toronto. The colour was terrible, and the customer service was awful. It was a waste of my time and money, and the horrible customer service added insult to injury.
I get my haircut done by Margaret and I love it. She is very skilled and knows her stuff. I like that she makes suggestions on what way I can do my hair and what colour options would suit me. She cuts amazing hair!
One suggestion is that the reception lady (grey hair older lady) is a bit snobby and not very friendly. I'm kind of afraid to ask her for any advice on products they sell. She seems very cold. Also at other salons when people take the payment they ask "Oh how was it?", "Do you like your cut". This lady says "It will be $80", then talks to her colleague while you are putting in your pin or signing. Then says thanks and that's it. She also seems rude to her staff. One time I was waiting for my appointment with Margaret for just 2 minutes in the lobby and I was early, the receptionist lady screamed at her poor assistant coworker "Where is Margaret? C'mon she has a customer". Seemed really unprofessional.
In my opinion, I only have to pay and deal with reception for 5 seconds but my great haircut I have for weeks, so I always go back.
JC salon review -
This is the 4th time I have gone here and EVERY time I am dissapointed and the customer service is awful. The first time I went I liked the colour at first until it turned green after a few days of washing it. which is ok if they can fix it as I did ask for a cool tone. I went back for them to fix it and the manager charged me again. I told the her/the manager I thought they were fixing it so I shoudlnt have to pay. She was rude about it and made me feel like an idiot.
I would not have gone back there except I was given a gift certificate and needed to get my hair done so I thought I would give it another try.
I showed pictures of what I wanted and said I wanted blonde highlights in an ashy/cool tone and not gold and they turned out gold and brassy exactly what I said I didnt want then tried to tell me that they cannot correct it without making it darker. doesnt that defeat the purpose of highlights? I said I wanted small pieces and they did large panels/chunks on the top and back of my head. I paid anyways but told them I wanted it fixed.
When I complained the manager (the older grey haired woman who stands at the counter and cashes people out) was nasty and made me feel badly about saying I didnt like it. she was rude and made sarcastic comments to me. She is always rude, every single time I have gone there. Even when my friend bought me the gift certificate they said she was rude about how much to spend when they asked how much to get sicne they didnt know how much ti woudl cost.
Anyhow, when I asked for it to be fixed, they said they coudlnt make it the color I asked for but could try to tone it which might not work, and put low lights on the top. (why tell me you cant make it the colour I asked for after- that doesnt make sense... if you cant do it without it being gold, THEN DONT DO IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!) anyhow, they put lowlights and toned it to try to cut out some of the gold but its still gold and brassy. I said I liked it to save face becasue I was already made to feel embarressed for not being happy and delusional for saying its gold/brassy which is is.
Anyways they need a new manager or she needs to change her attitude towards customers. This is a salon, you should not have someone like that representing your bsuiness at reception talking to customers like that especially when you want repeat business. I sent them two customers and they both said the haircut was ok but nothing special and that the manager has got to go.
All and all if not for anything else the manager should not be that way to customers and I know from other people and other reviews I have read that I am not the only one!
This is not a top salon, I feel they are only busy due to the high traffic area. The customer service is awful and if you dont get what you ask for dont count on having it fixed properly and not without attitude from the manager.
Waste of money to not get what I wanted and be made to feel embarressed by the manager made it so much worse.
For that reason I will never go back to that salon.
I saw this salon on a TV show so I figured I would give it a try. I opted for a facial and massage as well as a haircut since the advertised prices were pretty reasonable. The facial and massage were okay (probably because as I later learned that the lady doing them was not a registered massage therapist RMT). I have had better and would not come back here for these services. I would prefer to go somewhere with RMT's who actually specialize in massages. I then went for a haircut. I enjoyed my hairstylist and the haircut I received. My first impression of the salon was that everyone was a little cold and snobby. Nobody was particularly warm or inviting. Overall it was an okay experience but I likely will not return.
