Last summer my kitty escaped and brought back fleas with her, before I knew it all three kitties had them the poor babies so I acted fast and went and got Sergeants Flea and Tick Shampoo it took two washes per kitty (so six washes, oh yes it was so fun)
But aftwards I gave them a comb with a flea comb and they were good as new ! I highly recommend there flea powder for your carpets to, ours didn't get that bad but the friend that introduced me to the brand swears by it :)
