Breyers Smooth & Dreamy Frozen Dessert Reviews

Description

Breyers Smooth & Dreamy delivers all the decadence we crave from regular ice cream, but with half the fat and calories. The secret lies in its Cream Press SystemTM - a process that breaks apart the cream into smaller droplets and distributes them more evenly throughout the ice cream to deliver a decadent taste and texture. Whether your tastes are simple or you like something more indulgent, Breyers Smooth & Dreamy Ice Cream comes in five yummy flavours that’ll suit everyone’s preference: Natural Vanilla Bean, Creamy Chocolate, Mocha Fudge Brownie, Strawberries & Cream, and Dulce de Leche.

For my review I tried Mocha Fudge Brownie, and it was AMAZING. On it's own, so delicious, but even up against its full-fat competition! I'm blown away by how smooth it is! I have already told several friends about it.

Unfortunately, its price point holds me back a bit. The local grocery store I bought it from had it on sale for $8 a tub, which is a little high for me. If I spend more than $6 on ice cream, it has to be a pretty hard-to-find flavour. But these flavours have dupes in the $5 price point (full-fat or not).

Overall, this is definitely something I'll watch for and buy when it's on sale. Otherwise, I'll stick to a smaller portion of a full-fat but less expensive ice cream.

    WHAT'S ADVERTISED

Breyers Smooth and Dreamy is advertised as an ice cream dessert with an indulgent taste at 1/2 the fat of regular ice cream, which translates to 120 calories per 1/2 cup (125ml). The proprietary Cream Press System technology behind the Breyers Smooth & Dreamy splits up the creaminess of the ice cream into tinier droplets and spreads them out. The result is a deliciously creamy taste and texture, which uses only half teh fat and calories of regular ice cream.

    INGREDIENTS

Modified Milk Ingredients, Water, Sugar, Fresh Cream, Glucose, Natural Vanilla Flavour, Mono And Diglycerides, Cellulose Gum, Guar Gum, Polysorbate 80, Carrageenan, Pure Ground Vanilla Beans.

    THE REAL SCOOP

I readily admit to being an ice cream fiend, one with hankerings for deliciously full-fat, creamy no-holds barred old-fashioned ice cream. In taste-testing Breyers Smooth and Dreamy, I selected the Natural Vanilla Bean flavour to give as fair a comparison as possible.

It was a pleasant surprise to find that the taste and texture of the Breyers ice cream was much creamier than your typical "low fat" or "diet" ice cream. The taste of the Natural Vanilla Bean flavour is rewarding and decadent due to the creaminess, and there was a slight sophistication to the flavour that you normally would not get from a supermarket vanilla brand, as it were. All in all, it was a pleasant experience and having half the fat is a great bonus!

    BOTTOM LINE

For the price point, the Breyers Smooth and Dreamy ice cream competes with the likes of Haagen Daaz or Ben & Jerry's, which means that the value proposition has to be imminently clear. There is quite a bit more product in the tub than its peers at that price point (plus!) but it lacks the sheer number of flavours that the other brands have. This may make it hard to stand up to the competition if you are looking across all the flavours.

Strictly speaking, if you are looking for a vanilla flavour only, then this is definitely a good choice for value, taste quality and less fat. I would re-purchase for the Natural Vanilla Bean flavour.

Mmmmm, mmmmmm! Breyers Smooth and Dreamy, Natural Vanilla Bean. I tried the vanilla, on a lark. Truthfully, I am a chocolate junkie, but, sometimes you just want an old fashioned ice cream cone! One large scoop made a satisfying *thunk* as it settled into bowl, to my delight the texture of the ice-cream was as luscious on my tounge as it appeared in the bowl. Oh, how I have been tricked before! Other brands promise a creamy taste with 1/2 the fat but, the taste is only half the sensation. Ice-cream should melt slowly in your mouth, it should feel decadent and creamy..Breyers delivers! What about flavor? Wow, so fresh and rich, this Natural vanilla bean ice-cream leaves you satisfied! This is no plain vanilla, you can see real vanilla bean blended with rich cream to make a dreamy treat.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to try out the new Breyer’s Ice cream. I was part of the last Breyer’s survey and I absolutely loved it. I am completely hooked to the Banana Cream Pie!!

So here are the questions that I was asked about the taste testing...

    1. Which flavour did you test? I decided to try something different from the Ice Cream today. So I went for the Novelty Bar in the Vanilla Caramel Chip

    2. On its own merit, how did you enjoy this ice cream? Maybe I should have gone with either the double chocolate novely bar or I should have go the icecream (but then again, I did say that I wanted to try something different). The ice cream bar wasn’t bad, but I didn’t really like the caramel chips inside. They definitely did not taste like caramel…it has an awkward taste to it.

    3. Compared to full fat/full calorie ice cream, how did you enjoy this ice cream? Aside from the caramel chips, I didn’t notice a difference between the fat/full calorie ice cream. They pretty much taste the same which is good for a person who loves ice cream and never wants to give it up.

    4. Would you recommend this product to friends and/or will you buy it again? I'm not sure if I would buy that particular flavour. I would go back and try the ice cream itself instead of the bars. However, Breyer's is my favourite brand of ice cream and I tell everyone about it

I tasted mocha fudge brownie and overall, it was a fair icecream. i did enjoy eating it somewhat but it was not outstanding compared to full calorie icecream. Although there is a difference in calorie content between full and this icecream, I would rather eat a smaller quantity of full fat icecream than this one, because the flavour is much better in full fat. If i had to compare this icecream to low fat icecreams, I would say it is not superior in flavour. For example, if I was really counting calories, I would choose an icecream like Chapmans frozen yogurt and only get like 90 calories per125ml....and Chapman's flavours are very good like cappuchino or thier newer flavours recently introduced. Sadly, a week after finishing this icecream, I cannot remember anything special about it....like... exceptional brownie pieces or big pieces of dark chocolate or anything like that. This means that the icecream was not memorable...did not stand out above other icecream brands. It did not compare to President's Choice Icecreams which make an impression on you with their taste, body and chunks of chocolate, brownies, and other things. In conclusion, I would not buy this icecream unless it was on sale and I would not recommend it to friends.

I was excited to be selected to test out Breyer's new 'Smooth & Dreamy' ice cream. I chose the Mocha Fudge Brownie and was quite pleased with it. It definitely did not taste like 'diet' ice cream to me. The ice cream was so smooth and rich, if I didn't know it was 1/2 the fat I never would have guessed it. It was not quite as good as Breyer's Double Churn ice cream line, but for a diet product - it is probably one of the best that I have ever tried. The store I used the coupon at charges $9.99 for the ice cream which I would normally find high. However, I believe that the ice cream sells for less in larger stores (I bought it at a small town family business store).
If I were looking to buy a diet ice cream, this type would probably be my number one choice. I look forward to trying some of the other flavors.

I can't believe it's not ice cream! Or high fatty ice cream that is. As someone who pays a lot of attention to what they eat but looooves ice cream, this is the perfect compromise. It didn't have that ground-up popsicle taste that so many low-fat ice creams have. Both my friend and I who ate it thought it could pass for the real thing. It was creamy with just enough caramel.

My only complaint is that I had to go to 4 stores before I found a store that carried it. (Okay, one store carried only vanilla, but I wanted a real flavour). Hopefully more retailers pick it up!

    *** Editor's note***
The ice cream is real cream! Many low fat products are "frozen dessert" but these ice cream tubs are made with real cream. Glad you liked it!

Thank you Ali for inviting me to this wonderful afternoon ice cream party! it was definitely the type of event every girl loves and wishes to be invited to!
I was lucky enough to try all 5 flavors so I will list them in the order I preferred most

    1. Mocha Fudge Brownie: for all those coffee lovers, this is the perfect product for you! the rich mocha flavor bursts in your mouth as the creamy ice cream melts. The coffee is a great balance and makes the ice cream seem less saturated with sugar :)
my favorite part is the tiny brownie chucks that enhances the texture of the ice cream... its like a surprise in every bite!

    2. Dulce de Leche: its a little bit on the sweet side but it will most definitely satisfy any sweet tooth! I've never been a big fan of caramel because it is waaay to sweet for my liking. HOWEVER, the caramel in this product is more than just sugar, it leaves a trail of rich flavor that stays in your mouth that is indescribable, but very pleasant!

    3. Vanilla: Compared to the hundreds of other vanilla ice cream, the difference is that this one is creamier. If were craving vanilla ice cream, this one would be nice but i'd still settle for a cheaper brand because it isn't that much of a difference.

    4. Chocolate: who doesn't love a classic chocolate ice cream from time to time? but again, not much different from cheaper brands. of course, the advantage is that this one IS half the fat!

    5. Strawberries and Cream: Normally I like fruity ice cream, but the artificial flavor is too strong in this product. It would be a lot better if they had used real fruits with strawberry pieces! I found that the strawberry swirls were too sweet and so articial it didn't even taste like strawberries anymore :(

Although this product is double the price than the brand i usually buy (Nestle), I would still buy Mocha Fudge Brownie and Dulce de Leche just because these two are extremely delicious and creamier than regular ice cream. The fact that its 1/2 the fat is the biggest bonus, one that you can't even taste too!

I was also invited to the Breyers Smooth & Dreamy event in Vancouver and I was able to sample almost every flavour. I thought the ice cream was delicious and I really could not tell it was half the fat. In fact, it tasted even creamier than normal ice cream, I would say. I really liked how rich it tasted and it was so smooth it melted in your mouth. My favourite flavour was the Strawberries and Cream - this one was a surprise for me! I am a major chocolate lover, so I usually prefer chocolate ice cream, but the strawberry really won me over. You know how some ice creams have that fake metallic taste? Well, this one tastes exactly like real strawberries and pure cream. Mmm...so good!
My next fave was the Mocha Fudge Brownie. The mocha makes it really rich and has a strong flavour, and the little brownie chunks are just divine. I hate those ice creams that advertise brownie chunks and yet have none in the whole box. With this one, I had at least 3 chunks in my scoop and they were soft and chewy just like real brownies. Yum yum!!
Overall, I really like it. I would agree with the others that the price is a little steep, but then again, it is good quality ice cream. I'm used to spending a little bit more for less ingredients and higher quality. And as a treat every once in a while, I think you just can't go wrong.

Mmmm! Ice cream on a hot day (or any day for that matter) is amazing. This one is smooth and creamy as promised, and a bit fluffy with a mousse-like texture. I tried out "Creamy Chocolate," and it was great. As a self-professed chocoholic, I am quite picky with chocolate, and this one had a milk-chocolate taste - not bitter or fake at all. If you like harder ice cream, this might not be the best bet, but it was smooth and tasty, and definitely satisfied my sweet tooth! Oh - and I would have NEVER known it was half the fat! Does that mean I can have twice as much?!

Side note - I live downtown T.O. and found it near impossible to find! I ended up trekking to a big Loblaw to find it, so that was a major downfall. Availability is everything! If it was closer to my hood, I'd also try the bars
