#1029 in Books

Description

Paula Begoun has been reporting on the beauty industry for more than 25 years. Loved by readers and feared by corporations, she has earned the name of "Cosmetics Cop" for her thorough, authoritative investigations of beauty products and her fierce consumer advocacy. From drugstores and home shopping to department stores and catalogs, Begoun reviews all of the major cosmetic and skin care lines product by product — more than 30,000 in all. Regardless of the price tags, there are good and bad products in almost every line, and with the turn of a page, readers receive concise reviews and fast answers in this comprehensive, totally revised edition. Begoun covers product websites, efficacy, and whether claims such as youth extension are accurate. Individual chapters are devoted to best products, a cosmetic ingredients dictionary, and animal testing. A user-friendly rating system makes finding items worth trying a snap.

I have read all of Paulas books. I think they are quite good, a lot of the newer products are not in this book. I got her books from the library. I like to see what products she recomends I have seen her on T V shows, she has her own products now.

I got this book frm the library. Its a great reference guide. It has every product on the market and critiques them based on individual needs. It compares drugstore brands and boutique brands. Its great to see products that I should try and avoid. The only disadvantage is that products change constantly, there are always new ones coming in, so you have to be upto date with the book (there are several for different years)

I bought this book as part of those deals for book clubs [y'know, 5 books for $1 each to join].

This book counted as 2 books and I heard so many people rave about it. I thought I'd try it otu myself.

My problems with this book... Half of the items I'm searching for aren't in it.. And if they are, they aren't given much review aside from a yay or nay.. The ONLY good advice I got out of this book.. was about dry skin and what types of ingrediants to look for in lotions... Because it was BAD advice.. I took this advice and went into Shopper's drug mart and the woman working the cosmetic counter came over [after watching me for 15 minutes reading labels]. I told her about the book and she shook her head and asked me to describe my skin issues and show her.

She let me test several lotions with the ingrediants the book said to look for and they were GROSS very very thick.. almost like a damn glue stick on my skin. She gave me a bottle of aveeno with oatmeal and it was so much better! I've been using it ever since [so 2 years!]. She also helped me picked a bottle of mascara [I told her how every bottle I pick makes me "look like a hooker"] she told me since I'm blonde, very fair skinned with blue eyes I should use brown coloured mascara [and it looks so much better!]

If someone you know owns the book.. BORROW it.

My advice, speak to the person who works the cosmetic counter at your local store. There they can actually access your issues and help you out whereas the book.. Well they can't see you or your issues.

Personally, I threw this book in the garbage 2 weeks ago.. .. But took it out and dropped it into a box with my other useless books and gave them to the Salvation army [goodwill/donation].

I cheat and go to Chapters and read the book on the shelf. But---I don't buy a single product without checking it in this book first!

This book reviews almost every brand and product out there. What's in it, whether it is good for the skin, and how the product performs.

There is a more up-to-date version that you pay a membership for online.

Because I have dry skin, and most foundations are made to mattify skin, I had huge problems finding a foundation to actually not make my skin flake off. This book saved me. It's my Holy Grail!
