I am currently reading this book series and I am obsessed! (both the novels and the tv show) When you start to read the books, you gain a bigger appreciation for the series in my opinion. I like how each chapter is organised by character. Also, GRRM has very precise detail which I think adds so much more value because we do not get to see everything on the tv show. There are many story lines and plot twists that it becomes difficult to put the book down because you just want to keep on reading.

GRRM is an amazing author and his books are written very well. I recommend anyone looking for something different to read to give this a try! Do not let the length of the books deter you because once you get hooked in, you will start to forget how lengthy the books are.

I don't know why the price for this on chickadvisor is $9.99..... I think that may be an error, his series do not sell for a price that insanely low.

If you watch the TV series, you should definitely give the series a try!!!

I was late to starting the "Song of Ice and Fire" series, but once I got in, I jumped in with both feet. "Game of Thrones" is the name of book 1 (though the entire series is really a "game of thrones" and it's not unfair to apply the name to the whole thing) and the HBO TV series adaptation.

It's hard to sum up the plot of this series, partly because the author is still writing sequels but also because it's quite complex. In a nutshell, a mythical land is thrown into civil war when several powerful houses try to claim the throne. It's a classic fantasy with magic, dragons, ancient beasts and religion, but overall is far more down to earth than other fantasy series I've read. I read somewhere that part of the inspiration came from the historical War of the Roses, and I can definitely see a lot of that in these books.

The only downside (and this is typical of multi-book series) is that it can plod from time to time. Certain characters are less compelling and I find myself zipping through their chapters eager to get back to the players I prefer. It's bloody and has sexual elements, but again - nothing that isn't typical for the genre.

I've also watched Season 1 of the HBO adaptation (starring Sean Bean). It is fairly true to the book though steamier (cable customers love their sex scenes!) and certain plot points that are handled subtly in the books are practically shoved down our throats in the TV version. Still, a better adaptation than most.

If you love fantasy and historical fiction, you will probably love these books. If you're looking for a quick, digestible read, this is probably a little heavy for you.
