Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Reviews
#799 in Books

Description

The text of Pride and Prejudice is the 1813 first edition text.

"Backgrounds and Sources" includes biographical portraits of Austen by members of her family and by acclaimed biographers Claire Tomalin and David Nokes. Seventeen of Austen’s letters--eight of them new to the Third Edition--allow readers to glimpse the close-knit society that was Austen’s world, both in life and in her writing. Samples of Austen’s early writing allow readers to trace her growth as a writer as well as to read her fiction comparatively. "Criticism" features nineteen assessments of the novel, seven of them new to the Third Edition. Among them is an interview with Colin Firth on the recent BBC television adaptation of the novel. Also included are pieces by Richard Whately, Margaret Oliphant, Richard Simpson, D. W. Harding, Dorothy Van Ghent, Alistair Duckworth, Stuart Tave, Marilyn Butler, Nina Auerbach, Susan Morgan, Claudia L. Johnson, Susan Fraiman, Deborah Kaplan, Tara Goshal Wallace, Cheryl L. Nixon, David Spring, Edward Ahearn, and Donald Gray. A Chronology-new to the Third Edition-and a Selected Bibliography are also included.

One of the best books i ever read. It is so much more than just a cheesy love story!! It's all about overcoming our prejudices and our pride in our relationships with people aroud us. This book teaches us to put ourself in the other one's shoes and to think further than ourself. Amazing book.

This is probably my all-time favourite novel.
It has everything, comedy, drama, and romance. The language is beautiful and the dialogue is witty.
There is a reason it has stood the test of time and has gone on to be adapted into movies and used as the basis for countless unauthorized sequels.
Admittedly, the book sat on my shelf for years before I finally decided to give it a read, but once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down.
People think the classics are either difficult to read or boring. Just give Pride and Prejudice a try. You won't be disappointed!

I've had this book since high school. It was a graduation gift. I treasure it. I've read it so many times and every time, it's like I find something new. Love it.

Every girl should read this classic at some point in their lives. No matter who you are or how you live, you always end up feeling a deep connection to the characters. You become so invested in the live of Elizabeth Bennet that you almost feel as if you own her. She is sweet, stubborn, thoughtful, impulsive, intelligent and rather sassy for her era. She is as real with virtues and imperfections as you and I. She has no daring story about aliens or vampires or murdering those who oppose her. She has a story about real life. And I promise it is just as riveting.

This book is amazing, it has tension, family problems, love, money issues. Not only are you set into the regency era, it was actually written then so all the facts on the characters lives are true.

A book well worth reading, time and time again. Which I have. First read it in grade 12 English class, deemed a bit risque way back them but I was lucky to have a progressive teacher. Then again in University English class, where we read it , tore it apart then read it again. Such a marvelous story. Hard to believe what transpired so long ago. But loved to see the views of then compared to now. I think this novel is a must read for all young female adults and it wouldn't hurt some of those male types out there to explore this novel as well.

I loved it then love it now, and will probably read it a few more times before this life is over.

A fave forever. I love the characters, the historical period, the social manners and intrigue. It might be the best story ever told and I never ever tire of it. Our pace of life now actually makes me wonder if we could survive in that society. If you want to see it on the screen, I highly recommend getting a hold of a copy of the A&E;6-hr version. I watch it every year - like the addict I am

Read it in high school and loved it then. It is a classic romance but so much more. It is a great novel.

This book is truly my one guilty pleasure. Its such a classic and heart-warming tale, it's hard to imagine what life was like in earlier times, but this novel gives a clear idea and is well written. Jane Austen is a world renowned 18th-19th century author for a reason. She also happens to be one person I would love to meet if the time travel was possible.
