Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden Reviews
#12 in Books

Description

Publisher's description:
We follow Sayuri from her childhood in an impoverished fishing village, where in 1929, she is sold to a representative of a geisha house, who is drawn by the child's unusual blue-grey eyes. From there she is taken to Gion, the pleasure district of Kyoto. She is nine years old. In the years that follow, as she works to pay back the price of her purchase, Sayuri will be schooled in music and dance, learn to apply the geisha''s elaborate makeup, wear elaborate kimono, and care for a coiffure so fragile that it requires a special pillow. She will also acquire a magnanimous tutor and a venomous rival. Surviving the intrigues of her trade and the upheavals of war, the resourceful Sayuri is a romantic heroine on the order of Jane Eyre and Scarlett O'Hara.

I absolutely loved this book, and would strongly recommend it to anyone. Read before you watch the movie because in my opinion the movie is completely another review and score. Once you read the first page you wont want to put it down but you wont want it to end either. A great read!

This is such a unique, timeless book, definitely a must read! The relationship between Sayuri and her nemesis Hatsumomo is so fascinating, what every female must be able to relate to. Memoirs of a Geisha is one of the very few novels that I will happily read again.

It's been a few years since I read this book but I LOVED IT!! I remember not being able (or not wanting) to put it down and also being impressed that it was written by a man. The descriptions are so amazing and beautiful that you can almost picture yourself as part of the story. It is a definite must-read novel and one of my top 10!!

This fiction novel is about how a young girl became well known geisha. It's romantic, sad, descriptive, beautiful and well-written. You will not want to put this book down. =D The movie does not do this book justice.

I also enjoyed this book. The writing is detailed without being wordy and vibrantly descriptive. I was fascinated about the subject matter and it feels authentic, like the author did his homework well. The characters are well developed and the plot moves along quickly enough that it will keep you reading into the wee hours.
