#13 in Books

Description

Publisher's description:
We follow Sayuri from her childhood in an impoverished fishing village, where in 1929, she is sold to a representative of a geisha house, who is drawn by the child's unusual blue-grey eyes. From there she is taken to Gion, the pleasure district of Kyoto. She is nine years old. In the years that follow, as she works to pay back the price of her purchase, Sayuri will be schooled in music and dance, learn to apply the geisha''s elaborate makeup, wear elaborate kimono, and care for a coiffure so fragile that it requires a special pillow. She will also acquire a magnanimous tutor and a venomous rival. Surviving the intrigues of her trade and the upheavals of war, the resourceful Sayuri is a romantic heroine on the order of Jane Eyre and Scarlett O'Hara.

A well-written book. Even though most of the readers I assume did not know the places, the way it has written made the places very "visual" to the readers. I found this book very interesting and it is very enjoyable to read it

Beautifully written, heartbreaking and captivating. I loved this book, and the movie is also excellent. What an amazingly beautiful and tragic story. A .

    I loved this book!

I read it within a few nights. If I had the choice, I wouldn't have put it down. It created a vivid, and beautiful story in my mind - and I couldn't wait to see the movie. Although the movie was excellent, the book was better!

    Highly recommended.

I read this book years ago and loved it. Every time I see the cover I remember how much I enjoyed the book.
Book is old now so if you have not read it yet you can get a used copy at a great price.

A great book. It's an interesting look into the world of a Geisha and the business of it. I did watch the movie when it came out and while I did enjoy the movie I felt the book painted a better picture. It's a nice easy read so it's good if you want something casual because the story is easy to follow and the writing style keeps you interested.
